my budgie lays eggs in the nestbox and sits for about 18 days then we find the eggs on the ground with a hole pecked in it showing the yolk this has happened 3 times. she has her mate in with her. why is this happening? do you think we need a new male bird.

did she get disturbed while in the nest?Sudden sharp light, loud noises etc can get them so startled they peck holes in the eggs,or even eat them.A calm and quiet place, room temperature 70-75 degrees, plenty of healthy food readily available, extra calcium in form of crushed shells (can buy a sand and shell mix at petstores),should set the scene for perfect harmony.
She may be an egg-eater,some birds have this problem,it may not be the males fault at all.If you have other budgies, keep the cages so they all can see each other, they like to have a flock nearby, makes them feel safer.

The most obvious answer to this is the eggs are infertile..
How old i the hen and the c**k? I have a Hen like this, she has an egg butt as i type even though she has only just tossed out her last clutch of eggs.. excessive egg laying is not good at all for a hen and will eventually kill her if she keeps it up, separate her for a while to stop her doing this and make sure you give her a calcium/iodine block to nibble at and also consider getting some Probiotics and starting a water treatment program with Probiotics and Vitamins.. DONT let her have anymore than 3 clutches of eggs a year MAXIMUM..

yes its possible you might have a bad female who "kills" her eggs/young, but after 18 days , if the eggs were fertile, you wouldn't be seeing yolk, you'd be seeing a baby bird. did you SEE the male and female budgies mate? are you sure you have both male and female budgies there? could be the male is sterile, could be the female isn't actually physically letting the male mate with her. females will lay eggs whether the male has done his deed or not.
watch your birds more carefully.

If she is sitting on them up to 18days and then pecking them it obviosly shows that they aint fertile, as the chick should have started growing inside, How long have the two been breeding? sometimes it takes a few attempts if there new at it to get it right, also when you notice her go down on eggs its best to keep your distance let them get on with it, as some times they can destroy there eggs in trying to pretect them, when they lay make sure they also have alot of food on other, so they know they will have enough to feed there babys with, make sure she gets plenty of calcium (cuttlefish / fruit /veg or calcivet(u put a drop in drinking water)) if it continues to happen try getting a new male

in the event that they have been laid on the floor, and she or he hasnt been sitting on them for some million hour or so, then there lifeless. 12 eggs isnt precisely well-known, in many cases they lay approximately 5 to 9 eggs yet theres no longer something incorrect with 12. you shouldnt hae moved the eggs to a very diverse place, the mum will panic and sweetness have been they're, so there in all likelihood lifeless. mothers eject eggs because of the fact there no longer fertile, there no longer that nicely at being a mum (can take place), the male left her or loosing the eggs (have been are they!!!). you could wait untill she gets out of the container, pass right into a depressing room and shine a torch by the egg, in case you spot crapy brown build united statesa. the backside of the egg interior, its non fertile, yet while they have little purple veins with a dot in the middle, there fertile, congradulations. i wish i helped KittY

Obviously you're not ready to be breeding your budgies yet.

Take them to the vet and learn proper budgie care. He or she can tell you how to get your girl to stop laying eggs.

If you don't have a vet, you can find one at

If it has happened sometimes there has most likely been something to scare or make one of the budgie's nervous don't worry about it just try to figure out what is wrong.
