Okay, I'm in China, and my host family has a male cat. When I came, he started spraying everywhere, at least once a day, often on my bed, or in my room. I thought that it was just because I was a new person in his life, and smelled like about 5 other cats. However, it has been almost 4 months now, and he stil keeps at it. I suggested to my mother having him neutered but she said no cats in China are, and that's just barbarious.

Another problem, I think also related to his spraying, is that he masturbates all the time. He has this stuffed dolphin that he carries around, and I think he does this about twice a day. Before I came, I don't think my family knew what it was, but now they want him to stop, and he gets really mad if disturbed in any way. Also, if he can't find his dolphin, he tries to use someone's arm or leg, and literally attacks the person, biting and hisses, so that they have to find his dolphin.

Is there anyway to prevent this behavior other than neutering?

Hi there...in all honesty, neutering will be the only way to cease this behaviour--territorial marking/spraying. You are fighting against hormonal urges which are very strong -- spraying and the humping (masterbating) behaviour are instinctual. Neutering is the ONLY way to control those instinctual behaviours.

Perhaps if you find articles to help educate your host family on the process of neutering they may realize it is not a barbaric practice. Even visiting a local veterinarian clinic in China maybe the doctor could explain what is involved and how it will improve the cat's overall demeanor as well health.

Here are some articles to begin if you can translate:

There is absolutely no way on god's green earth to teach an un-neutered male cat not to spray. He will spray, you can guarantee it. Feliway spray will not work as a training implement and he will continue to find ways and places to spray. He will continue to be aggressive and could probably have litter box problems also, so be prepared for that along with the yowling and spraying. I won't tell you you need to have him castrated, but I will tell you to stop transferring your sexual squeamishness onto your cat. He hasn't a clue what is happening and doesn't care a rat's *** if he has balls or not, in fact, will be a lot, lot happier without them. He is NOT a human being, he is a CAT. And if you care for the cat, you will have it done. But if you want to go the vasectomy route, at least you are being conscious about the overpopulation problem.

That behavior may continue even after neutering him, since he appears to be an adult cat.Get a spayed female cat for him to play with, then she cant have kittens even if he tries..but the problem may get worse, because then he has to mark the territory all over again..spraying everything....so...
Let him keep his Dolphin.Neutering may lower his desire, make him a bit lazier and slower, but maybe he wont spray and ride the Dolphin quite as much.

He is spraying in your room to mark his territory, maybe it used to be his room before you arrived (was gonna say "came" but thought wasn't appropriate).
His humping of the dolphin may not stop even if he is neutered. We have a desexed male at the shelter who humps his blanket. We gave him a teddy bear to play with and if he is really in the mood we put him in his bedroom so he can hump in peace.
To stop him with his antics, perhaps a herbal remedy to de-stress/calm him may work. The Chinese are very good with this sort of thing, so perhaps one of the local herbalists may be able to make up a blend

I agree that the only answer is neutering. I'm just posting to show people this video. It's quite fascinating, if a little uncomfortable to watch. I had no idea cats masturbated either until I saw this clip. He's doing it with his paw.

Warning: you can see the cat's penis. Not that there's much of it to see. (sorry kitty)

The cat really needs to be neutered. Maybe you could find a Vet that would do this for them and offer to pay for the surgery yourself.

Neutering him will not necessarily stop the spraying. I never heard of a cat masturbating, that's a new one for me.

No, there is no way to prevent the behavior other then neutering.

Neutered cats also live longer, healthier lives.
