hello !! I have read some of the answers and they are good.I can add to this an old remedy given to me by my grandma
aloe vera gel ( from at least two fat aloe leaves)
1/4 cup honey
1/4 cup brandy
juice from two lemons squeezed
take the aloe gel and place in blender with the rest of ingredients. Blend well. Place in a glass jar with lid. Keep in refriegerator and drink a shot 3 to 4 times a day.
--------------------------------------------------------------
take ginger root ( root should be smooth and plump , not dry looking or wrinkly)
peel the ginger root well
you can either chop it really well or grate it.
( I prefer to grate it and get all the juices out )
boil water and place at least two tablespoons of grated ginger in cup. Season with honey. If you find this to be to spicy you can add cremora ( non lactose creamer)
drink this at least three times a day
please remember to drink plently of water to facilitate your body in the processs of expectorating your chest congestion.
You can also take a little piece of cloth and place a bar of what we call " alcanfor", it is a white square that smells like menthol. place this under your pillow at night and it will ease your breathing. You can also boil some water , take off stove, place vicks or the menthol tablet in water, or eucalyptus essential oil (few drops only) place towel over head and drape over pot ( careful not to get to close and burn yourself) inhale this and you also will get relief/
Garlic is wonderful for everything including chest congestion and cough. Take garlic cloves and make a tea or include garlic in your soups, and food preparations. If you can not stomach garlic take the odorless garlic pills.
Keep your chest well covered and if possible at night have someone rub vicks on your chest and back and put on a nice comfy t-shirt, also put vicks on the bottom of your feet and put some socks on. You will see how well you breathe.
To avoid a lot of congestion , stay away from dairy like milk and cheese for a while , they cause mucus in your respiratory system.
Rest, keep warm, drink plenty of fluids and most of all relax.
Hope you feel better.
Happy holidays!!!

1 Small Cup of Water
Fresh Squeezed Juice of 1/2 a Lemon
3 tsp Honey (or more to taste)
Mix together and sip.
Or for an extra kick try a Hot Toddy
1 1/2 ounces Whiskey
1 ounce Honey
1/3 ounce Lemon Juice
3 ounces Water (Hot)
The alcohol often helps to ease coughs. (if you are over 21 of course :)
You can also try putting some eucalyptus oil or peppermint oil or tea bags in boiling water and then place a towel over your head while breathing in the steam. But be very careful as it is very hot.
Hope you feel better soon!

There are several home remedies for cough available. Those that I remember of the top of my head are: 1) chop up cloves of garlic and mix them with honey, drink 1tbsp 3x a day; 2) Get fresh oregano leaves and boil them into a tea and drink that (minus the leaves).

These are all good answers and I think of them will work but the one that works best for hubby and me is horehound candy. It is difficult to find, here we can get it at a drugstore and a place called Atwoods. It will help control the cough and also eases a sore throat. I hate the taste but it does work (hubby likes it).

looks like you got plenty of answers, for me and my family, a vaporizer as always helped to calm the cough. shut the door turn the vapor on and feel the difference. don't take anything that says for running nose as it won't allow the flem in head or chest to come up.drink as much liquids as you can get down during the day and try to rest at night.

There are a lot of remedies out there. I never know if I have a cold or if it's my allergies. I usually take an allergy pill, I never take cough medicine.

NyQuil will knock you right out then you won't have to worry about coughing. But wait if you won't take cough meds I know you prob won't take NyQuil since it's like 10 percent alcohol. Still, to me it's the only thing good about being sick LOL.

According to detailed medical studies, cough medicine does nothing of clinical value. Actually, you probably will have a better result from sipping brandy and staying warm.

well, you could use cough lollies, but if they count as medicine then you could just rest and not do too much activity, keep warm or research about non-medicinal remedies, i.e honey or chicken soup ;)
