You will need identification to fly within Mexico, just like in the US. It would not necessarily have to be a passport, but since you will have to have a passport to return to the US, unless you are driving back, why not use your passport? If you are driving back, you won't have to have a passport to re-enter this year, but will in 2008.

Since you are not a national of Mexico, you are required to carry with you at all times your passport for identification purposes. A driver's license issued in the US will not be considered a valid document for identification due to it has not been issued by the US government but rather by a state government.
It is just like a Mexican national here in the US cannot utilize his/her Mexican driver's license in lieu of their passport.

confident. The airline received't care, basically bypass to their information superhighway website and purchase the cost ticket. i'd be extra in touch about getting from the border crossing to the airport, because the border crossings i understand are not interior walking distance of airports, and particularly finding out what you want to do to import a Mexican motor vehicle into the U. S.. you may anticipate some pointed questions with regard to the border as a US citizen showing up utilizing a Mexican motor vehicle.
