I have tried to find this question out by doing more research but have had no luck. I am not planning on breeding her at this age I am just wanting to know so that I can be expecting her heat cycle. thx

It isn't unusual for large breed dogs to not have their first heat until the are 12 - 18 months of age.

I recommend getting her spayed BEFORE she goes in heat. It will preetty much eliminate the chance for her to get mammary cancer and it will eliminate reproductive cancers and a very serious often fatal uterine infection, pyometria.

This happened to me with my small *****. She didn't have a heat for a year - well over a year - from puppyhood, and then came on. I wouldn't worry about it. The first heat depends on her own internal rate of development. There is a link at the bottom of this post which is well worth reading on the heat cycle if you want to manage it or have her spayed.

However, When she finally came on I then got her spayed a few months after her heat. The heat is a real cruelty to the dog, best thing I did no worries now! Her vulva is small as I got her spayed quickly, but she has no trouble peeing.

Female dogs come on heat about twice a year, as the whole cycle lasts roughly 8 months. For some breeds like German Shepards, it lasts 4.5-5 months though.

The cycle starts when you will first notice some blood spots about and dogs at the door! This shredding of her womb cells, lasts for about 12 days, before she is ready to mate - entering the ovulation stage of the HEAT, which lasts about 10-15 days.

(Best to pencil in about month for the heat phaze from noticing the blood spots and behavour changes such as trying to escape and whining constantly)

There are 2 phazes, HEAT and NON-HEAT made up of four stages - the whole cycle - All thoughout which her hormone level are peaking them declining, triggering different behavours.

Phaze 1 - The 'HEAT' where you should not let her out!.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
(1) Pro-oestrus, (the blood spots) - a preparatory stage before ovulation;
(2) Oestrus, or ovulation proper; This is where she gets pregnant - BTW: any mating here will be 100% successful - its not 'hit or miss like with humans!!

The 2 stages making up the heat phase can be variable - lasting about 3 weeks or longer on average.
(i.e. the HEAT lasts about 1 month)

Phaze 2 - NON HEAT (SAFE) PERIOD...
---------------------------------------------------------
After the Heat, you get about 2-3 months of
(3) Metoestrus, This is when the hormones are winding down - often a phatom pregnancy and latation occurs in this phase.
Then, about 4-5 months of
(4) Anoestrus - This is the rest period in which there are no hormones.

(So thats about 7 months in total NON-HEAT, 1 month of Heat)

Then the highly variable 8 month (or about 5 month for some breeds) cycle starts again!

You should try to get them spayed in the appriopirate part of the NON HEAT phaze, the Anoestrus, so that the progesterone level is very low, which prevents some behavour and bone complications later.

Spaying 'freezes' the level of hormones at the time - locking in that stage's behavour forever. So don't get her spayed within the heat period!

i.e. Best to spay about 3-4 months after the blood spots, or about 3 months after her 1 month heat ends.

See the link at the bottom for graphs etc..
