I used to have that habit but one thing that works is to cut your nails short (not dangerously short) so that you can't bite them and whenever they grow, clip them while they're small and you'll forget about biting your nails.

you know, I heard something about that, but I'm not sure if it relates to everyone who bites their nails. I heard that if you had a 'nervous/stressful' childhood, that this could be just a reaction, like how someone taps their fingers or bites their lip when they're nervous or stressed. This is just a way that people who bite their nails, 'cope'? I also heard that it has something to do with being 'shamed' as a child. Like, if you come from an upbringing where you were ridiculed, or humiliated, teased, maybe even verbally abused, as a child, by someone close to you, that this was what resulted in nail-biting? I don't know, I heard these about these things and thought I'd put it out there, in case this may or may not relate to your situation.
I have that terrible habit, too. I bite my nails until they bleed! But I don't know the cause of it. I think a part of it has to do with my nerves, and because it's been a terrible habit since I was a child, that it's just become something that is very difficult to stop!!
I actually managed to stop biting my nails, but I pretty much had to keep my hands so busy that I didn't have TIME to bite my nails, even under pressure, at work. Then it became obvious that because I work as a receptionist, I had to stop because my fingers were exposed all the time. So, to stop myself, I would keep gum near me, and make sure I had some kind of mints or gum, or something I can chew on...it sounds weird, but this was what worked for me....

Like you said, it's an acquired habit. Some people do it out of nervousness. They're fidgety and biting their nails seems to ease that tension. You can try coating your fingernails with bitter lime or some other bitter solution so that nail biting will be more distasteful and you can kick the habit.

This may sound weird, but I used to peel the skin off my nails. It's a really thin layer, so you can't really feel it.

I started wearing nail polish to make my nails look nicer, and after mearing them, I always feel bad a bout peeling them, because of the effort I put putting the polish on.

You can try the same method, and just remind yourself that nail polish are not tasty and not good for your body if you swallow it.
