I've nothing against hunting--my husband hunts, my father did in his day--but please tell me why-when you have a gun shy dog you just leave them!!?? I have 3 beagles now who've been left in the woods surrounding my property--they're now house pups and I love them dearly but I'm running out of space here (we already had 2 labs!). I put ads in the paper, alerted the little country store in the village up the road--no one came to claim these guys and girl. We know they're gun shy (good grief, I popped open a can of biscuits and they ran under the bed!). If you don't want them don't just leave them, if they run off out of fear make half an effort to find them, I do what I can but like I said-we're running out of room for your dogs!!! The last one was half dead from starvation and cold. She's now fat and lying by my feet but you can't always count on that. Just think a little bit before you leave them-ok!?

The last beagle was in the pasture for a month---I'm thinking anyone who valued her or wanted her would've been back. All of them come to me when I call them (with their new names). Pretty much a whistle and "c'mere") and they're at my feet. I grew up with beagles and I know they like to run--they also are great family dogs who love their owners and like lying by your feet.

First thing I did was check for tatoo's and had them scanned for chips--nothing-just irresponsible owners!

Most cases they are lost from the hunting party, hounds will follow a scent for miles and spend hours tracking it down.
have a vet check them over and see if they been ''micro-chipped'' or if there are tattoo's in under their lips, chances are the owners are looking for them or have given them up for lost. I, myself lost a dog named Casey, a female 5 years ago up north of Ontario, Canada and had spent most of my hunting season that year looking for her. Just recently in September, I received a notification from a vet, over 300 km away from our camp, (approx 180-200 miles north-east) that she was found. She got messed up with a porcupine and the people who found her 5 years ago brought her to the vet and they explained to him how they got her (she was half dead from starvation and cold). the vet scanned her and found that she was ''chipped''. With the code, the vet accessed the system and got my address and phone number, and contacted me. All my dogs are chipped when they are pups. My next problem is when I go up to identify Casey is ''Do I bring her home after all this time'' ? OR ''Do I let the people who found her, keep her'' ? My kids want her home as well as me but what about the people who found her ? Guess I have to let our hearts decide for us......

people who do that shouldn't use dogs to hunt in the first place cause anyone who has ever trained a dog knows that if they are gun shy you can curve that also. there isn't much a little training can't help for a dog, they are smart. Treats and rewards work wonders. I love beagles I dont have one but do plan on getting one sometime and may or may not use him/her for hunting I just want one :-P. I would never leave a dog my family has always had dogs and they are part of the family I hate when people treat animals like crap, I'm glad there are people like you out there trying to help.

Perhaps you should widen your area of advertising these lost pups. When a dog becomes gun shy, it will run a great distance to get away from the frightening sound - and perhaps hears another and runs further. This type of dog will also hide when being summoned because this horrible fear. God bless you for taking these pups into your home. I'll be they are very much missed by their owners.

I did not know about this case, it is actually very surprising for me. I would never let my dog die just coz.......!! you dont need to apologize or anything. It is just wrong to do that with animal. They should be ashamed!!Period!
Whatever the hunters do, I dont know much about that. But I can certainly tell that you have been doing a great job and it is hard to believe that people like you are still out there to protect innocent animals. Thanks for doing that.

Beagals are notorious roamers. Chances are fairly high that they weren't left there by hunters. Its possible that they just got lost and came upon your farm. My granddad had some beagals that would just take off for days at a time and then come home.

I agree, but its not just Hunting dogs that get abandoned.
some people will/get give Animals for Christmas, once the novelty wears off, they will get dumped along road sides as well.
Or just treated Poorly.
Same goes for dogs that have unwanted puppies.
People just dump them, if they cant find homes for them.
