You know there are ethics studied without the need of religion. The fact is that when axes were invented there were those who thought that it was only going to lead to trouble and they were right about 14 people die every year due to axe abuse. Every new and exciting innovation has its potential to disrupt civilization as we know it at the time. However, the definition of time is the measurement of change and without change you have no time. Everything is changing, all the time, that is why they now call it "spacetime" because nothing in the space can be defined unless we also express what time it was when we are defining what was in the space. So change is at the very core of who we are as inhabitants of this Universe. Therefore, we must constantly be prepared to change. Trying to maintain the absolutes is the core of religion, and just leads to frustration and even worse, when we destroy just to remain unchanged. There is a book called the "The Axe Maker's Gift" in it the author implies that for every advance we as a species have made, there has been a consequence. We cannot stop the advance as that is who we are and why we are here. Oh it sounds idyllic to think of a society with little or no pressure to advance, but it is a myth. Because deep inside that story is death, pain, suffering and anguish that is the Human condition. We were enjoined to subdue the earth and make it our own. We were given the intellect to do that, and we do every chance we get. Oh there is always a problem created with a problem solved, and we must work it through, but without that it would be a very boring existence. Cars have changed our world for the better and for the worst. Nuclear energy is also holding us at bay, and so will stem cell research. It will bring us some of the most revolutionary advances in medicine ever, but it will also threaten our very existence as we know it today. We must be prepared to take that chance as that is how we become who we were meant to be and subdue the earth, and now the very Universe we inhabit. If we are afraid of that we will not change, and it will bring us to the brink as much as advancing our knowledge will. 99% of all species which have ever occupied this planet are extinct. It is because they could not adapt to the changes. We must advance, and we must adapt. The changes will not always be good with new advances, they never are, But we are who we are because we have been able to adapt so far. Stem cells have a good and bad side, we must be prepared to deal with it as it is, and not just stick our head in the sand.

The answer to your question is NO,i do not agree. If you didn`t know, stem cells can be obtained from the patient`s own tissues, for example you can make stem cells transplant to recover after a myocardial infarction and you use the patient`s marrow stem cells or other tissues(depending of what kind of heart disease the patient has) to get that stem cells. It is not necessary to "create" an embryo for this. You can use bone marrow, blood, fibroblasts from cartillage, growth factors, all are in trial for different medical conditions.Just put your search on google and you will find millions of articles, all saying the transplant is autologous, meaning from the patient`s own tissues!

Ethics is a socially mutable process. When society's desperation outweighs it's taboos, stem cell function will occur.
