Ordinary cam:
Picture are taken on a support made of plastic band with a special mixture of dye and silver salt that react to light. this is the type of camera you can find for at last 100 years. the advantage of these process is the much higher resolution that can be achieve, better and more subtle color reproduction, better contrast, the resolution on this kind of media is calculated in line by millimeter. ( around 125 line by mm). i would say that its around 15 to 20 mega pixel equivalent for a 35 mm. some pro camera use bigger support to can go to equivalent of 60 -80 mega pixel and more then 200 mega pixel equivalent for a field camera.
this type of photographic will probably disappear in 10 years, when digital camera will meet the quality of this process. this process is still used by some pro photographer as well as artist and people who did not renew their equipment.
they do a lot of pollution in the process ( chemical are needed to reveal the image on the plastic band and after other chemical are used in printing.)
they cost much more to use because you need a new film each 24 or 36 picture taken, plus you need to process the whole film to get picture.

these type of camera are often called 35mm camera referring to the diagonal of the image taken on the film.

Digital camera:
digital camera use the same technique (more or less) to capture image but instead of capturing the image on a film, its captured on a ccd or a cmos, these component react electronically to light ( in opposition to the chemical reaction involved in the classic 'ordinary' process). the image is then stored on a electronic media and can be deleted, edited and printed at home.

no chemical is used and its virtually costless to use ( except for the buying of the camera)

all Digital camera express their relative quality in Mega pixel .A 5 mp camera will give nice 5 x7 print out and not that bad blow out depending on the quality of the camera.

there no other kind of camera.

follow the link bellow to have much more info and model review.

i like canon and nikon as most of the camera they do perform well in their category. But others company do have good camera too.

Think of the pictures as digital and not the camera. The digital picture or film is making the picture into a file that you can move around. You have more possibilities with this because you can transfer to computer, to a thumb drive, email, connect to some cell phones etc. With the regular, you've got the print and the negative. Less possibilities.

I use digital. An ordinary camera does not let you see the pictures after you take them, but before they are developed. The cameras use film where a digital uses a memory card and you can view the photos (and delete the bad ones) before you print them.

Digital cameras you can see the picture right after you have taken it. You can also plug into your computer and upload the picture onto there. A regular camera you cannot see the pictures until after you have the film developed. I have a canon digital camera, and love it.

A DSLR gives you a chance to expand. You can buy additional lens, filters and flash units where as a digital camera, with a built in lens, leaves you no chance to add on. Also, a digital slr affords you the ability to understand the mechanics of photography.
