If we are in a legitimate war, there would be no need for a draft but if we get to a point where we have to draft military personal we have to question what we are drafting them for and whether we should be fighting at all anywhere!!

People who do things because they want to are almost always do better than those who are being forced. And there's no talk of reinstating the draft, no matter what you may have heard.

Reinstate? Selective service is the draft. They just haven't reached the point of calling people up.

Actually a draft would be a good idea! However they should make it where every male must go as soon as he finishes high school. I am sure the people who vote rather or not to go to war have son and grandsons. They would only send their own children and grandchildren If they felt is was absolutely necessary!

Few civilians and none of the military want a draft. It produces the wrong kind of soldier for the jobs that need doing. In a way, that's something of a shame, because a lot of kids who aren't even thinking about joining would benefit from military service.

It's insane and just plain stupid to think or say that this country is "taking" rights away by instituting a draft.
Military service is the responsibility of each and every citizen of a country. Look, first and foremost, too many of our youths are simply not mature enough to go out in the world and act responsibly or to hold down a job; the experience in the military service will give them discipline and make them into responsible adults. It is not a matter of "giving back" or anything like that... but every abled person should take an active part in this country's military service (it's mandatory in some countries for both young men and young women... yes, both genders are treated equally in the military). With today's escalating crime rates by youthful offenders, and today's high school drop-out rates... military service would teach our youths skills they can use toward obtaining gainful employment once they complete their 2-year hitch in the service, and those that want a college education will be able to take advantage of the military's educational benefits, too. They will stand a better opportunity of being mature and responsible adults, and proud members of our society by way of deeds, not just idle words.
Right now, our nation military is voluntary. And we're vulnerable because we're under-manned; what do you think would happen right now if we were attacked or invaded by another country? Who would be physically prepared to defend this nation from a surprise invasion/attack?
No wonder our youth today are suffering staggering numbers of obesity! They have no sense of duty to their home or country and sit around wasting time with video games, watching TV, and generally farting around while other youths around the world are active in sports moreso than the average American youth, and participate in civic duties... we're doing great harm to our youths by being so damned soft on them! Everything is "Gimme this" and "Gimme that..." without the sense of responsibility of earning anything in their carefree lives.
Yes, the draft would take many kids off the streets and would help deter much of the crime in our streets by giving our youth discipline and give them a sense of responsibility and pride in belonging to a military service but it would also better prepare our citizens for natural emergencies and in times of a possible attack by an enemy. It would also instill a sense of "belonging," something many of our youths today need so desperately!
I'm also sure that the reinstatement of the draft and the military experience would also influence many people's views on the issue of war once they KNOW they have their own boys and girls serving in uniform... and it would include the children of the rich and powerful, and the children of the elected officials (those two groups are the ones whose children are the least participate in military service). Right now, the CEOs of the super-rich and powerful companies that are profiteering with the war in Afghanistan and Irak, which they also promoted, are raking in billions of dollars while endangering the lives of our military personnel... let's make the draft and have their children drafted, too, and we'll all see a quicker resolution to the war!
I believe every man and woman in this country should participate in the armed services in one way or another. They should know what it takes to defend our rights, freedoms and liberties, and should KNOW firsthand the dangers that exist in defending democracy.
Yes, we have freedoms, we have rights, and we have liberties but we also have a RESPONSIBILITY to defend the privileges we enjoy... each and every one of us, particularly those who defend going to war! Those who object to military service because they do not believe in killing or in carrying weapons can do kitchen patrol or serve in hospital as orderlies or do office work... there's a place for everyone in the military service, and there's also a lot of discipline and responsibility to pick up, too. The draft should induct men AND women, too (well, if women are to be treated as men's equal in the work force and before the law... they should ALSO be drafted like the men; fair is fair and should have no exceptions)

The draft would actually be a good thing. If there was a possibility that everyone's son could be taken to a war, they would fight the war as much as possible so it would not happen. Thus, we wouldn't go to war.

They wont call me or my family up
It's against my religion to kill. Protection of religious rights are in the constitution and Mohammed Ali set precedence.
Therefore they can draft this--------I will not take a life for the "state" because it is wrong to treat your neighbor, any neighbor badly, we treat others as ourselves then there would be no wars.

If this is the only way to keep up the required number of personnel in the armed services, then there is no other choice.
