Lee or Li is one of the common 100 family names in Mainland China. In fact it is one of the top 5 names. It's an ancient name that goes back at least 4000 years. The character Li (for the surname) shows a tree on top and a boy(?) on the bottom. If Li is NOT used as a surname it means either a plum or a plum tree.
There may be a loose association to power, the Chinese plum tree can flourish in very cold weather.
The original Li Family would have to have existed around the Yellow River, which is where the Chinese first settled. Therefore, that would Li name of central origin, as the Yellow river (kind of like the Mason-Dixon line) divides north and south China.

hi I can give u the best answer, chinese is more mysterious for many foreigns. Lee can either be used in family name and the first name. For first name, it is meanless, coz the first name is named by the parent, so they can give theri child any chinese name they like, but for the family name, they get from their dad. And the people with the family name lee, is not only in southern or northern, they are everywhere in china
long long ago, in chun qiu(æ¥ç§) and zhan guo(æå½) dynasty, the empoler call zhou arrang the earth of china to the Morrisons who have the big Exploits .(many family name came from that time, they change the family name because of the Manor ) So one of the story is the ancient who have the place called lee, change his family name to LEE. another is say that duing the end of shang dynastry, many leave their hometome because the bad king of shang called zhou wang, some people who can survive because the plant called mu zi(æ¨å),they take it as food. So inorder to Memorial ,they change their family name to lee(æ), u can easily see the forming of the character come form this plant, upon is æ¨,and down is å. these two character form the family name(LEE), :) that is all, and merry x'mas
