A year ago my husband saw a little beagle in our pasture, she was there for a month in the snow and ice, when he finally got her to come in she was skin and bones. I've had her obviously for a year now and have gotten her fattened up and healthy. In the last 2 weeks or so I've noticed one breast by her back legs is large and pretty much hanging down to the ground. There's no lump there, doesn't feel knotted and isn't causing any pain. I have an appointment with the vet next week--but what could it be. She looked like she'd had pups a while before we found her, but it's been a year. Mastitis, cancer, or is she older than I think and just has sagging breasts!!???

I've never had a female dog--always had the "boys" who are all neutered. She went into heat once last summer--was due to go into heat again 2 mos. ago (by my calculation) but never did.

Every time an intact female dog (one who hasn't been spayed) goes into estrus (heat) her chances of breast cancer rise. It could be cancer, it could be something simple like an infection. Seeing your vet is the best answer. Try not to worry too much and bless your heart for taking her in and giving her an obviously loving home. What a wonderful thing to do! Your little doggy is very lucky. I wish you the best and hope it's nothing serious!
