well I think that when you get into the upper ranks you will find that they do not live so poorly.
If you yourself are poor, then how will you have something to give to the poor that are in need. How can I feed them if I can't feed myself. Poverty is from the devil, and God wants us to be able to live and give to others. Don't get me wrong either, I am not in agreement with the exaggertated TV preachers that live like kings. Both extremes are not good.

Poverty vote?
Do you mean their vows?
Taking an oath of poverty surely rules out the problem that exists in some Protestant churches, where preachers create these mega-churches, promising miracles if people give enormous offerings, crap like that. Benny Hinn and others are incredible for the way they ask for money from people who can't afford it.
Some priests do get around the rules, putting property in their relative's names and such, but most are true to their word. It's a good thing to not get caught up in finances. Christ did tell his followers to give up their property and follow him. Seems good to me.

The Vatican is estimated to hold over $3 billion in assets. I am certain that over half of that could be sold or released and then used for other purposes, such as food distribution, housing, shelters, education and roads.

When I was a student I wanted to be a Catholic Priest. But their lifestyle was too demanding. They sacrifice alot of comforts that we take for granted.

It's hard to live in poverty when everything is paid for by the Church and your parishoners, including your house and many meals.
