The problem with fifth grade is that children are now beginning to have to take more responsibility and having to learn how to be more organized. Schools and teachers demand more homework of them because they are getting them ready for the middle school years. It is a very stressful time for kids. Kids have a lot of pressure now. Don't take this lightly. If you child is saying that then she musst feel stress and you need to work with her to help her. The academics are very difficult in fifth grade alslo. Ask her teacher what you can do to help at home.

5th grade.....I have a daughter in 5th grade as well. I don't know that I have heard her say that it is hard, but she has started saying that she hates school now. She used to love it. I think what happens is that up until this point school has pretty much been a fun place to go, and now that they have made it to 5th grade, the work part comes in. They really have to start learning new things. Not that they are hard, just new and not what the kids are used to. My daughter does amazing with her grades, her issues this year are socializing too much. Your daughter may be going through some other things at school and it is affecting her school work or she is just saying that it is harder because of other things not actually the work. She could also be having some troubles, the transition into harder and more work could be something she isn't handling well. Talk to her teacher. Even if you need a weekly update, do that until you can figure out what is going on with her.

I am a recently retired elem teacher. 4th grade is the big change in academic challenge and then in 5th it is often the hormones, they are chaning into middle schoolers and that focus is on social issues. In elem school , ours ended at 5th,and by spring the 5th graders drove us crazy .... hormones and puberty. But, I will say, I taught my 4th graders the responsiblity of good habits in learning. I was strict with getting school work done and in. And I have had many many students and parents come back and thank me because when they start changing classes in middle school, if they aren't doing their work it is much harder to keep track of it for the parent and the kid can often fade into the woodwork for weeks, being as there are many teachers dealing with many kids. I guess I'd say if a kid hates school all of a sudden or one year, see if you can get to the bottom of it. 5th and 6th are rough transitions. Hope this helps.

No, 5th grade was a cake walk. I missed 60% of my assignments and still got an A. Your daughter probably lacks the focus needed for school.
