People in China have very limited English abilities. It is very hard to find someone that you can actually understand. In Shanghai, go to places with foreigners go, such as the Yu Yuan gardens. Most vendors there know enough English to persuade you to buy something. It's a good idea to write instead of speak because China has so many dialects that differ greatly. Write your locations down in Chinese characters and just show them to people and they will show you how to get there. If are visibly a foreigner (i.e. blonde hair, blue eyes), you won't have any trouble finding people who will want to help you. Young people wanting to practice their English won't hesitate to come chat with you.

Shanghai is just a well-known global metropolis drawing more and more attention from throughout the world; therefore see what that town is offering with hotelbye . Shanghai is a popular travel location for visitors. In Shanghai you will see the wonderful Yu Garden (Yù Yuán), also referred to as the Garden of Happiness. This Garden addresses a place of more than 20,000 square yards and contains an external and an inner garden. The oldest part may be the Outer Garden with further improvements being made in the 18th century when Sansui Tang, the park's main hall, was added. The newer and significantly smaller Inner Garden days from 1709 and includes features typical of a classical Chinese writer's Garden: appealing little pavilions, decorative rocks, and miniature mountain stages, dividing surfaces and little wetlands, and even a richly decorated theatrical stage.

Yes, you will find English speaking Chinese people, especially in Shanghai, since it's an international city. There is a big push in China now for people to learn English. I have many Chinese friends who speak English quite well. It shouldn't be too hard for you to get around.

English is a problem in china, the way of pronunciation would be different, so you need to be very slow when you ask something, keep a calculater with you... its still hard to find one good English speaking person in china, and in shanghai as well... learn some body language too... you will be complete stranger in china, specially if you will be in a taxi they dint know at all... maybe 0.1 percent you will find who can speak English... the best advice for you, if you meet a good English speaking Chinese, then ask him to write down places name in Chinese and English for you... so you can show them to take you there... and keep your hotel card with you, if something is written in Chinese with you, then no problem you will never lost... all you have to do to meet a good English speaking person.. and write down important words... good luck
