sounds good just baked three loafs of date nut bread but if you assk me it's cake much like carrot cake butwith dates and walnuts instead of carrots ...use your margerine egg flour baking soda brown sugar nuts dates cinnamin nutmeg and orange extract mix it up and pour it into some greased loaf pans and bake at 350 for 45 to 80 minutes and voila I added four sticks of butter instead of one( actually 16 oz tub of smart balance ) and it came out perfectly delicious. you can get your details from the allrecipes site.also those prefab cans of icing are very good too.I tried the cream cheese icing.
peace out and enjoy

English nut cake:
2 pounds dates, pitted and chopped
2 pounds walnuts, coarsely chopped
1 cup white sugar
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
4 egg yolks
4 egg whites
DIRECTIONS
Preheat oven to 300 degrees F (150 degrees C). Grease and flour a 10 inch tube pan.
In a large bowl, combine dates, walnuts, sugar, baking powder and flour. Stir in egg yolks. In a large glass or metal mixing bowl, beat egg whites until stiff peaks form. Fold the whites into the fruit/nut mixture until no streaks remain. Spoon into prepared pan.
Bake in the preheated oven for 90 minutes. Let cool in pan for 10 minutes, then turn out onto a wire rack and cool completely.

All you need to bake a cake is self-raising flour, eggs, butter and sugar. And that's it. For flavour you can add just about anything you like. As for ready-made cake mixes, they're rubbish; fake food.

You've got enough to make a cake but forget the hassle, just buy a cake mix. Someone else has done it all for you, just add eggs & water, mix and bake.

Baking powder, usually. Also some recipes call for baking soda and even corn starch.
