"In God's Image" has a very good answer. Be honest with yourself, don't be afraid to be honest with yourself, which involves taking a risk of trusting your heart, whether it is that you're in love or even not. Be honest with yourself and then trust the gut reaction you get when you are honest.

YES!! For months now I've been walking around thinking that i'm so lame because I've never been in love before. The truth is, I have. I loved this guy but I could never get the nerve to tell him, even though we were going out and all. But then we broke up because he was going off to college and I got SOOO hurt by it that i pushed it out of my mind. And so when I was thinking about this last week..i was like.. I did love him. I really did.

Yes, it's possible about being in denial about anything. Sometimes we are blind to the fact of many things when we aren't ready to admit it to ourselves for whatever reasons, whether they are conscious or not. And sometimes we REALLY feel like we are in love and we are not. . .
