$1 per drink seems a little much. With multiple bartenders it seems you cant tip every other drink. how should it be done?

Tipping has gone CRAZY in the USA. If you notice, the people really pushing tips happen often to be waiters, waitresses, etc. Bartenders share tips in a situation like you describe. Tip ONCE, if at all.

I used to be a bartender at an open bar for weddings.
The drinks were free and still some people would never give us a tip.
Some people were very generous.
I say tip the bartender for every drink.
Why not, if they are free?
They don't make all that much money so why not help them out a little bit.
They are depending on tips.
Which is why I quit doing that for a living.

Tipping a service provider is not mandatory, but a custom that should be respected. The amount you leave for a tip should reflect the quality of service received, but there are standard modes of tipping as well.

If you're spending lots of time at the bar or ordering labor-intensive cocktails, tip $1 a drink.
The person throwing the event is responsible for tipping.

The easiest way to figure out how much to tip is by leaving 15 or 20 percent of the total bill -- in most scenarios. The etiquette of tipping is similar in most parts of the service industry.

Try to make sure that the bartender sees the tip you leave, by notifying him or giving it to him immediately after receiving your change. The standard tip for a bartender if you order one drink is usually a dollar, otherwise it's 15% of the bill. An easy way to ensure you leave a tip is to ask for the amount of change you want back, after calculating the tip into the amount you leave. Note -- this may be hard to do after a few shots of tequila.

You know, if you're not paying for the actual drink (as it's an open bar), I don't see how leaving a buck per drink would kill you - presuming that it's an alcoholic drink. A buck per glass of pop/ soda/ Pepsi/ Coke/ whatever - something inexpensive that doesn't take a lot of effort/time/skill for the bartender to produce - IS too much. For something like that, fifty cents per glass or a buck every other glass is fair.

1 dollar seems reasonable to me.

You'll be sure to get the best service if you tip on every drink

Or you could run a tab and just pay 18% when you sign the card, assuming you are paying the later bill.

Why is it a problem for people to take care of their bartenders, whether they are paying the bill or not. Seriously, they work for a living too. Having a good time? tip the barkeep! Having good drinks, tip the barkeep! Barkeep cute, tip the barkeep. come on really!

If you can't afford to tip, you can't afford to go out and utilize someone else's services.

I tip a dollar per drink or at the end of the night I drop $5-10 dollars in the cup they have, depending on the service I received.

We usually tip large at the beginning of the night. Although, there may be multiple bartenders; the one we tipped very well makes sure he takes care of us for the rest of the evening.
You could also just tip him/her well at the end of the evening.

i know at serveral wedding receptions i've attended that have open bars (i'm only 20), that at the open bars they have tip jars. Not everyone is going to leave money. But leave few dollars in there through out the night.

*and no i didn't drink, the non-alcoholic drinks were at the bar too*

If there is a cup for money put some there.
If no such cup or basket available just have a smiling face and thank the bar tender.
Drink as much as you can
