German Shepherd, they're good for protection. Rough Collie is good with kids, and it's really smart, but I heard they're expensive.

I agree with keesnbcs. A protective dog does not make a good dog to be around children so young. A protective dog's instinct is to bite when threatened or provoked. I don't believe any dog is a good dog to have around an 8 month old. Some are better than others, but the amount of work involved in owning a dog is a bad mix with trying to care for young children. It sounds like a bad time to bring a new dog into the mix.

Labs are by far the best family/kid friendly dog!!! Our first dog was a St. Bernard (excellent dog), then an Old English Sheepdog(another excellent dog), then we got the Labs-much as I loved the other 2, the Labs have been the absolute best family dog!! We also had a Dalmation (not a good kid dog). She was great with me and the son who was her official owner---nasty to anyone else (don't let them watch 101 Dalmations or go to the fire station!!!). We also have Beagles--but they can get a tad cranky around small children(tho that's the only dog I ever knew growing up). My vote is a lab or golden retriever. Everyone is going to have their own favorite best dog. You might just want to go the animal shelter and get a pound puppy--if it's fetched up with your kids and you train it right, the pup will be well behaved and they'll be best of buds!!!

When i was really little i had a Collie..the prettiest dog ever :) he was soo great with me, even tho i played ruff with him at times :P i also had a german shepherd..German Shepherds are GREAT dogs, they love you, they protect you, and they can be big babies :) german shepherds are also really, really smart. The others types of dogs that i've heard are great with kids are : Beagles (very loving, not to mention cute), Labs, Golden Retrievers, and Huskies...

I don't think i would get a dog that is "well-known" to be overly protective, such as rottweilers (spelling?), pitbulls, and dobermans---i would stay away from those if i had small children...

you can also go to a shelter and find an inexpensive, mixed-breed, bet nobody told u that :)

These are my favorites breeds in no particular order=Labradors, Golden Retriever, Irish Setter, German Shepherd, Husky, Malamute
I've owned or been around all these dogs my entire life and they are all excellents dogs.
The 2 best dogs I've ever owned were mixed dogs, 1 was an Irish Setter mixed with chocolate lab and the other was a German shepherd mixed with a malamute.

A Jack Russell, they are cute, good with kids, dont eat too much and have been known to kill snakes.
But as dogs have many parasites that can make health problems for people it is a good idea to worm them daily with a bit of olive leaf extract or vita klenz (kids formula) these products also protect the kids and you too. Olive leaf or parsley in the drinking water is good too.

I wouldn't recommend any dog for "protection" with young children in the house. You're inviting trouble. If you would like a pet, there are many good breeds: Boxers come to mind, as well as mature Labs and Goldens.

That's an easy question! Get a lab. They are very big and friendly and awesome with children. Nobody would mess with a lab so they would be great protection!

Im sure you are going to get some trash telling you to get a pitbull and how wonderful they are. Those dogs like to eat children and should all be put to sleep.

I have 3 St. Bernards and they are excellent with my 4 young kids!! They won't let the kids out of there sight when they are outside!! They stay right there with them all the time!!

You could adopt a retired greyhound race dog. I hear they are just the nicest dogs in the world, they are highly trained, and you provide a home to a dog who may otherwise be put to sleep.
