8 years old is very young,do not diet just get more active and dont eat alot of snacks or fast food and dont skip meals.Your body is going through stages right now so alot of kids look heavier suddenly and then a month later grow taller so it evens out.trust your body and enjoy being a kid you have the rest of your life to worry about your weight.

The only possible reason that an 8 year old would ever NEED to lose weight is lack of activity. Remove the video games and the computer and make them go and play.
** Clarification in case the emphasis wasn't understood ... I'm discarding medical reasons, since they don't apply. If a medical condition contributes to the weight gain, then medical advice is required on the proper method of losing it. But honestly, I know of very few children with medical reasons for obesity. However, there are plenty of overweight kids who are simply getting lazy ... and it's because of lazy parents. Get rid of the electronics and get them off their butts.

A healthy diet that follows the food pyramid for the child's height, weight and age, and normal childhood outdoor play. Tag, hide & seek, bike riding, roller skating, some organized team sports (but no more than 1 per season). Limit television/video game time to ABSOLUTELY no more than 2 hrs per day, 1 hour is better.
Go to www.mypyramidtracker.gov to keep track of dietary requirements and make sure they meet nutritional guidlines.

They shouldn't be, they're 8, they should enjoy life and not worry about what they look like and they shouldn't try to lose weight. They can have a healthy diet and make sure they are active by playing with friends and going out to ride their bikes and walking places with friends, but they shouldn't be so worried about it. Have a healthy diet and enjoy life.

at 8 yrs old a child should not be losing any weight... remember kids are still growing, height and weight will increase...dieting at this young leads to eating disorders....anorexia, bulemia, and obesity-by way of overeating to compensate for the fact that people think they are fat....i went through this at the age of 7...it gives a sense of self-loath, body image problems i.e body dysmorphia, low self esteem and makes you want to eat more... i exercised everyday, i was only allowed to watch tv 3 hrs a day....but back then i didn't care i didn't come in until it was dark...i rode my bike for hours or played down the street at my school...alot of it has to do with genetics and fat storage...my sister and i were both physically active and ate the same meals, no fast food, yet she grew up to be extremely skinny and i grew up to be chubby
if you are serious about preventing your child from being the fat kid, then go about trying to teach them how to eat healthy now, a well balanced diet...include exercise, riding a bike, playing with friends.....it's about exerting more calories than you put in your body....but don't lower the amount of calories...just change the empty calories for foods that will keep them satisfied and full and make sure they spend time outside playing

No fast food. A good balanced diet. Arrange some fun time to exercise outdoors, or just walking in the mall.
Don't nag, it will make the child self-conscious. Don't talk about the child's new diet plans to anyone, lest the child can hear you. Be kind.
