There are two kinds of DVD's available. Blockbuster normally buys only one kind which is wide format and not full format that is the reason you cannot see the movies in full screen.

Your TV is a 9:16 ratio screen. That is the height is 9 units high compared to 16 units wide. For example, a 36" high screen will be 64" wide. (9X4=36 and 16X4=64)
BTW, your old TV was 3:4 ratio.
However, movies are shot to fit onto screens in a movie theatre.
There are several formats, such as Vistavision, Panavision, etc.
Typically, these are 2:5 ratio to 2:6 ratio pictures.
Using the same big TV as above with the 64" wide picture, a 2:5 ratio picture will now be 26" tall. When we display it on the 36" high screen, we will have 5 inches on the top and bottom as blank screen.
It's even worse with the 2:6 ratio pictures.
Most of the DVD manufacturers will trim a tiny bit off each side so that the top and bottom bars are a bit smaller.
It has nothing to do with Blockbuster.
Also, most HDTVs have a feature where you can enlarge the picture to eliminate or at least lessen these bars.

This most likely means that your DVD player thinks your TV's aspect ratio is 4:3. Look through your DVD player's display settings and find something like display, aspect ratio, screen resolution and what you most likely want it to be is "wide screen" or "16:9" and your dvd player should output it to fit your tv.
I can also assure you that your problem is not that you rented the full screen (4:3) version of the DVD. If this were the case, there would be no bars on the top AND it would look stretchted out. I am assuming there are bars and because of the bars it looks stretched out? If that is the case, then my answer is what you are looking for :)

3 possibilities:
1) Make sure you are renting widescreen.
2) Some DVD players need to be widescreen or 16:9 enabled in order to know what aspect ratio to display on your TV. Refer to your DVD player's documentation or press the options, setup, aspect ratio on your DVD remote.
3) Most HDTV's are 16:9 or 1.78 aspect ratio. Some movies are are 2.38 aspect ratio, which does result in thin black bars on a 16:9 tv.

Ensure that you have set up your dvd player for the correct aspect ratio for your display. If that doesnt fix it, check the specs on the disc.

Some DVD's will look like that because they are filmed in a 1:2.38 ratio. Your TV is either 1:1.75 or 4:3
