Hi, i have a three year old green cheek conure called misty the conure family are great for first time owners and also great as a family pet as unlike the african grey they will love anyone they are a all round bird and will not just choose one person they are also great with kids, scream wise they are also great as they have a soft voice compared with the jenday conure and the sun conure who can be very very loud!
Green cheeks like any other parrot have the ability to talk and do tricks aslong as you find a baby and not try to take on a one year old as they will already be set in their ways, however they are quiet like i said with soft voices so when they talk you cant hear them as good as you would a grey when its shouting hello,
my bird has learned alot of words like hello, oi, dinner, night, kiss and so on the favourite of hers when she isnt happy is BOSS, being trained is also down to you, aslong as you start doing it from when the bird is young then you stand a good chance of training them,
Please bear in mind that althou alot of parrots do have the ability to talk alot of time they dont want too, so if you are looking for one that talks then i would say that your better off getting a older one that is already talking as no one can guarantee that the baby you buy will deffinatly talk in the future. They do require like any bird the encouragement to talk, like when you wake up in morning and see your bird, greeting it will the same line morning, and at night saying night to it, aswell as just saying hello every time you see it and so on.
Its always best when buying a parrot to find a breeder rather than get one from big shops, as a breeder spends more time with them and they are much tamer than they would be if bought from a shop, Also this makes sure that your baby stands a better chance at being disease free.
They dont require as much time as a african grey but they still require being out of their cage for play times and being handled alot,
If you work long hours or are away alot i would avoid buying any bird as it wouldnt be fare on them,
They Also need alot of fresh fruit and veg like all parrots as feeding just seed will end up causing health complications, There cage also needs to be a decent size so they are able to open and flap there wings inside, and toys are a definate must to prevent boredom,
Hope that helps? Goodluck

Jason,
Green Cheeks are not the best talkers (they sound like Mickey Mouse) among the Conure family but they can talk and they are very trainable. Be prepared though, they tend to be a little nippy the first 6 months of their life. However, they are very loving little guys and make a great bird for a novice owner.
Another great Conure that has an extensive vocabulary and is a real clown is the Blue Crowned. You might want to do some research on them. However, please remember that all birds are individuals and some may not choose to talk. Instead of looking for the ability to vocalize, look to see which bird will be the better companion for you.
Good luck!

I have a green cheeked conure (GCC) and I love her! They are my favorite little birds, so full of life and energy and spunk. That being said, they do like more attention than a more laid back cockatiel. GCC's need a nice large cage with toys to keep them occupied, they are balls of energy and love to play. They also need plenty of out of cage time to play with you and on a playgym.
They can talk, and can be trained. I hear they generally start talking around 9 months old. This does NOT mean that all GCC's talk though...it really depends on the bird...so I wouldn't base your decision solely on talking ability. My GCC is 6 months old and is starting to say hello...though it comes out "eh-oh!" lol. They're not the best talkers as far as parrots go, but they can talk.
To train it you're going to have to be very diligent. I'd check out stuff about associative learning and positive reinforcement online. Clicker training can work well. Good luck!

Hi! Before you get a bird, make sure you do all your research. birds are a lottt of work- they are extremely messy, loud and demanding. they need a lot of love, attention and care, such as a lot of different foods (fruits, veggies, pellets, seeds etc), expensive toys and perches, a cage (as big as you can afford and they are not cheap) and they need to see an avian certified vet you can find one here: www.aav.org/vet-lookup (with visits at least $200). They also need a lot of "out of the cage" time, in a safe enviornment. there are also a lot of dangers (zinc poisoning, teflon gases etc.) that are harmful (and deadly) to them. I suggest that you check out BIRD TALK, a great magazine about pet birds and their care. they have a lot of information for the first-time bird owner. And not all birds talk or do tricks. You definately should not get a bird just because you want it to look nice in your house and make it talk because some don't. they don't learn how to and it takes a long time to teach them. If you decide that getting a parrot is right for you, i highly suggest that you adopt, instead of buying from a pet store or breeder, because there are a lot of perfectly healthy birds out there who need a nice home. (they might already know how to talk already!) good luck!

They are sweet- relatively quiet for a parrot. They can talk and are intelligent, so could learn tricks with training. I refer to them as the cockatiels of the parrot species (but are a little more intelligent than most cockatiels)

I used to have one. You bet they can learn to talk: they can talk like an african grey (in context). They are extrordinarily intelligent, loving, confiding, demonstrative, funny, and not too loud (when compared to their cousins in the "aratinga" group). If your household is quiet, they too will be quiet. They don't need tons of space, and are not expensive to keep. They are very good at playing with toys, which they like to bash around. In short, these pint-sized parrots really do make EXCELLENT PETS,
