the lady i got my new dog from said he was crate trained. he would stay in his kennel at night when everyone was sleeping and when no one was home. well, i didn't go and get a crate, but i got a baby gate, and i have him sleeping in my kitchen. he has his food/water, a bed, and one toy. but anytime i put him in there like that, he freaks! he starts crying and whimpering, and trys to get out. if he was crate trained, he wouldnt be doing this???? right? when i let him out this morning and came back in my room, first thing he did was hop in bed and get under the covers! he acts like hes supposed to sleep in the bed with us!!! i dont mind him doing this, but hes not completely potty trained, so until then, hes staying in the kitchen. i dont know, what do you guys think?

You'd cry if someone randomly took you to a new house with strangers. He's homesick and lonely. Give him time to settle in, and grin and bear the whining for now. Give in and he'll never get over it.

The puppy needs to be a 4 or 5 month old before crate training. The crate should be just big enough to stand turn around and lay down. No bigger. If it is to big the puppy/dog will use one end to use and the other end to lay. You try to not leave the dog in there but sleep hours and work hours. You take the dog out every time you get it out of the crate and a few minutes after the pup ats or drinks. This crate as the puppy gets older becomes the safe place. when people or other is happening this is the place the dog will go to to feel safe and should not be bothered there. this crate as the dog gets older will go of with the dog if he/she has a slep over somwhre else cause it is her/his place. The puppy may have an accident or two but will learn quick if you do your part right. If the puppy does not use the crate and you come home/get up and the puppy goes outside then you give a treat. Try to leave the puppy in there for no longer than possible and offer the puppy a walk before returning to crate. You may lock the puppy in for a time out but you do not want to turn this in to the bad corner.

He was probably crate trained but being in a new area he is a little uncomforable and looking for attention. Try getting a pet bed that will fit him with a blanket he can have for himself. The crate itself would give him a little security when sleeping at night like the bed and blanket would do. Also try and put a small radio on really low for him to listen to so he thinks he is not alone.

well, being crate trained (tiny space) in one home, versus being in a space that's wide open by comparison, in a completely new home, is a very different situation. Any change for a puppy can throw their routine off. He may have gotten used to feeling that confined, safe space around him. Perhaps that's part of why he's diving under your covers? Some dogs LIKE their crates, odd as it seems to me. If I were you, I'd look for a crate, or even just a box to put in with him at night so he can feel secure.

Best of luck!

Your dog may just need time to adjust to this new way of doing things. There's a pretty big difference between sleeping in a nice, cozy crate (think "den") and sleeping out in the "open" in the kitchen. Keep in mind that your dog is in a new setting with new people and doesn't have the security of his crate.

See if you can borrow a crate from someone. Put the pup in it for a week. After that leave the door open but block pup in the kitchen. Just like everything this will take time…but it will be worth it..

crate training is totally different than baracading. you should have continued with a crate from the first day. now you have all kinds of bad behavior to correct to get him back to where he was when you got him. dogs understand a "den" (crate) they dont understand being partitioned off from the "pack" it feels like they have to beg for forgivness to be allowed back in. if i were in your spot i would buy the crate it becomes his forever bed and safe place when left alone.never punish there.

I think you should get a crate, crates make dogs feel more secure when they are used to them. It would also help greatly with the housetraining process.

He's probably just nervous about his new surroundings and getting him a crate similar to the he's used might help, so will putting one of your worn shirts in with him.

He is crate trained not room trained. Purchase a used carrier and he should readjust in 10 days or less.Have a great holiday.

If he is used to being in his crate then sleeping in your big kitchen is probably upsetting to him. I would invest in a crate for him. It sounds like it is very comforting to him and it will save you a lot of frustration and noisy nights! Good luck :)
