Because mentally ill doesn't mean 'stupid'. Also, the 'illness' bit is more to do with the criteria used to diagnose that person, but might not necessarily be their own experience of it. In other words, for some people their mental illness is a disability, for others it is not, and even the level of disability varies. Nice that you are interested though. There are lots of different 'mental illnesses' also and you might like to find out if you are interested.
Note to some of the other answerers: we don't like being called 'crazy', especially as some of the things that non-mentally ill people do are just as 'crazy' to us.

first, one has to define mentally ill.
two, when in Rome do like the Romans, just act sane most of the time, and no ones know, and by the time they do, it to late.
three, 'mental illness' is something that is decided by a majority, there are no hard rules that one would find in things like math or other sciences. (for that reason, psychology is know as a soft science, because there no proof to any of it, only theories. its just made up. a try to make cause and effect relationships, mostly on conjecture. in a hard science, results should be the same given the same relationships. in people you know this not true. ) from that one could conclude that having young brave men and women going far a way to die for no reason, and driving the economy into the ground is a sane way to act, because a supposed majority voted for a man who thinks this is a good idea.(as long as its your kids)
four, there are some mentally ill persons that are so fast and smart, that we, people of average intelligence, have no idea how to communicate with them, and have no idea what to do with them, so we put them away, terming them as 'crazy'
it may come down to "is this person going to do physical harm to themselves or anyone Else?" if no then they are just accepted as "off" ,'weird', just nuts, etc. but not in need of being institutionalized

mentally ill is a label that helps us all live together. It helps that person cope with whats happening in his life. I have a mental illness but I also have the gift of discernment. That gift until fully understood can drive us crazy. Until recently I didn't understand the gift fully; I do now. I'm not crazy just gifted. It's a needed gift. To be able to tell between Good and evil. and then have an outlet for what you know; to be able to help people get it right. I was so shy I would let it slilde but I would then feel terrible for it. Answer do all things in love-step up to the plate in love-Love and faith conquer all things. To answer you question if they are doing a good job dispite their label that's a good thing.

Many mentally ill people are deep thinkers and because of that they don't blend in with the normal person and this add to their problems, but with medication they can function normally, but on a deeper level than the normal average person and I believe it gives them an advantage in whatever they persue in life.

Because you've had a stereotype of mentally ill people, that they cannot function normally like other normal people. It is only in extreme cases of mental illnessness that can prevent a person from living a normal, fuctional life, like someone with severe depression or a person who is extremely psychopathic (sociopaths).
