I am not sure ADD or ADHD really seem to be the cause of his defiant behavior. It sounds more like ODD. Oppositional Defiant Disorder. ODD can usually be corrected with positive parenting techniques. Check out the link I list in the source for more info on ODD.

Additional Information - After posting my answer I went on to read the other questions you have posted in the past month. Your life is a mess. It is very possible that there is nothing wrong with your child at all, this could just be his way of dealing with all the stress your family has been going through. You may want to think about seeking counseling for the two of you, as well as put together a plan for getting your life back together as soon as possible and restore the stability to this boys life.

Could be ADD/ADHD--or could be simply a case of hyperactivity in the classroom. If this is not the case, either he is being bullied by another child, or he is just acting out everywhere he goes. Have you considered a conference with his teacher? Maybe, at least at school, if you talk with the teacher, you might can get a scope on how to handle it there. If all else fails, maybe talking to his Doctor might also help.

The only other thing I can think of is if he's acting out for attention. If that's the case--give him all the attention he can handle, and more. Also, and this may not be P.C., but it usually works if done right, some form of stricter discipline, including a small dose of corporal punishment (if this is not medically induced) might be neccessary. I'm not saying beat the child, no. Just perhaps, and only if needed, a couple of well-places pops on the bottom will, at least, shock him and maybe get him to realize he's headed the wrong way. Again, though, this is just if all else fails and the Doctor concludes he's just acting out for attention.
Good luck with this, and hope you can be successful soon, before he gets much older, and it gets worse.

I would suggest a Psychiatrist. Only because I had a similar problem with my 8 year old son, he wouldn't keep still for a second and the attitude was ridiculous. He would get into a baby mode when things didn't go his way. After the evaluation, I discovered that he had a severe case of ADHD and a Behavioral Disorder. This accounted for the strange behavior. I wasn't to keen on the ideal of a Shrink, but I like yourself ran out of other options. Needless to say, he has been doing great ever since.

I know the mild form of autism may have sounded like a stretch (got 2 thumbs down) but seriously research the symptoms of Asperger's and see if your son has any more of the symptoms.
The rolling on the floor and the shower thing seem to be indicators or some sensory issues going on there, as well as the inability to understand his own bad behavior.

I would have him tested, he may just be too smart for his grade level and more challenging classes would help him settle down. I do hate that so many people are taking their kids to doctors who just diagnosis and medicate. However, their are kids who truly suffer from adhd and there are medicated and non-medicated treatments for it. Since it doesn't sound like he is suffering from his hyperactivity I would first try and see if the school will do a placement test on him and maybe advance him, I would also see about finding a child psychologist to have him tested for the adhd, if he does have it try the non-medicated therapy route first.

My soapbox: This country is overly dependent and overly medicated. Many people want medicine for whatever ails them that the are given antibiotics for something that maybe viral and the medicine has no effects on virus'. Parents and doctors also tend to over diagnosis and over medicate adhd. I agree that it exists my nephew suffers from it, in his first year in school he went from an outgoing playful boisterous child to a sad, painfully shy kid due to getting in trouble at school (he would get in trouble every single day) from his disease. I would see him at least once a week and he became shy when it came to myself or his grandparents or anyone. He was showing signs of anxiety disorder when he was finally tested and diagnosed. His case needed something immediate to help him be able to behave in school. He has improved immensly since he was diagnosed 5 years ago.

It is sad how many answers involve ADD or ADHD it seems like 1 he is bored. and 2 he might have a issue with the teacher or a classmate that he won't talk about. Last year my sons teacher almost had me convinced he had ADD since he would do his work then cause trouble, this year he is in a new school with more challenging lessons and is on a-b honour roll.

You should have him take an IQ test. Some kids that are very smart can act out and become hyperactive because the work is boring for him because it might be too simple. Many kids get misdiagnosed with ADHD and hyper-activeness, when they don't present all of the signs just some of them. For your son, if he does not have learning difficulties, it could also be that what they are trying to teach him does not challenge him intellectally. Have him take an IQ test for his age and go from there.

No matter how smart or talented your kid is, he has ADHD. he may not have attention deficit, but the hyperactive disorder. School is not fun past kindergarden. Eventually he will realize, that even though it is dumb, you still have to go. Don't be afraid to revolk privledges. "If you don't eat your dinner, then no..." if problems continue see a doctor for advice.

It sounds like he's not being challenged or motivated enough. If he's doing so good in advanced reading, maybe they need to do that with his other subjects, and then to get him interested and keep him interested, set up a reward chart so that he can see what he's done and how much further he has to go before he gets the reward.

ADHD no doubt. sounds exactly like me when i was younger (19 years old now). i was kicked out of almost everywhere i went. i couldnt sit down for ANY reason. not even video games or tv could hold my attention for longer than 5 minutes. like your child, while i was bored to hell with school, i was in the gifted program and read 4 grade levels above my actual grade. Go to a child psychologist and they will do some testing. and most likely he will test positive for adhd. they will put him on some type of medicine. i was on dexidrine, adderol, and now im on concerta. try not to get on dexidrine. it can have some pretty bad withdrawl symptoms and weight loss. but good luck and be patient. i turned out fine and im doing great in my 2nd year of college so good luck.
