A good girl friend of mine has started to ask about other girl friends, and one time when I mentioned that I know few girls in this area she said, "Good, that means less competition for me." What does she mean by asking about other girls and calling them competition? We decided that we are only friends and no more!

It means she doesnt really want to leave it as "just friends". Or she could mean that even as a best friend, she may be afraid of losing the best friend status if you have another female friend.

Insecurity and selfishness best explain this peculiar behaviour. To some extent, a she may not trust you entirely, which is no fault of yours, but rather a branch of her insecurity.
The source of her insecurity is person-specific such that it may stem from appearance, childhood, or a plethora of factors. Insecure people tend to feel threatened by potential competition for attention and affection and somewhat paranoid about such things.

You made a good decision in demoting her to 'friendship' status.

she probably likes you more than a friend though and what she meant about the no competition thing, she probably meant that they dont compare to her, that she looks good and she's better, basically no competition!
