First: these days you can not judge a book by what it looks like, because there are 12yr olds that look like 20.

To answer you question: No I do not feel you are wrong for questioning and getting his id. because that is/was your job to do. Now whether you do it (ask for id) all the time is another thing.

I can understand why you would question yourself of being wrong because in your mind judged him ( he did not look 40 yrs to you).

Don't feel bad you can use the point that it was job to do.

No. In NYC, the cops will ticket the bar if they find ANYONE inside without an ID. The cops are doing it to prove a point and they don't even care if the person is obviously 60. If the cops are after a certain bar, they will use ANY excuse. My friend has this problem all the time at the bar she works at and she explains the law to people and that the bar has gotten 'raided' before and people have still cursed her out and called her a fat, ugly, b*tch because she wouldn't let them in without ID.

*Oh. It's tough if you're a cashier. I don't know as much about that law but I know some places have that sign that says "if you look under 27, we card" or something. I don't know the rules at the place you work at but you did the right thing since you couldn't really tell by looking at him. The guy is a douchebag.

People do not understand that your store will get into very big trouble if they are caught selling to minors! which is why almost every store now has an "ID Everyone" policy. It doesn't matter if you look 99!, you still need to show your ID.
Believe me, it is better to see the ID and be sure, then be fired for selling to a minor.
OR fired for just not asking to see the ID! My friend was fired from a convenience store just for letting a woman who looked to be in her late 60's push her into selling her some wine without her ID. Just follow your stores policy....if you get a really irate customer.....thats what managers are for! : )

heck, I used to get yelled at for asking customers for their ID when their credit cards weren't signed. Dont they realize that if their card was stolen and I didn't check that ID someone could buy all kinds of stuff with their card!?!

At the restaurant that i work at, we could get in HUGE trouble for serving underage people!! Like thousands of dollars in fines, maybe Jailtime, loss of job for sure!!

I dont really care who cares if i card them or not. If they show some attitude about it, i take in the situation and either ignore it OR say something about the consequences of not asking for ID...We sometimes lie and say that they have undercover officers ALL of the time and another server was ust fired for not checking an ID. It is up to you, but remember that it is your job and in the end, you are right!!

At my work they suggest you card anyone that looks under 40...so they should take it as a compliment!! We get pins to wear that say that we ID and that helps a lot!!

Where is work? If you had reason to ask about his age, like a bartender or a clerk selling cigarettes you were just protecting your job. The guy was a jerk for getting all mad. When your 40 and don't look of age to someone you should take it as a compliment.

I think the law should be, if you are buying age restricted materials, you should have your ID out at the time of purchase, no matter what the age. It should be the responsibilty of the purchaser to provide proof of age, not the responsibilty of the employee to check for proof. If the ID is not out before the items are purchased or ordered, than the sale will be denied, no exceptions. Many of us who serve age restricted items, also have a responsibilty to provide gracious customer service. Our abilty to do that is often hindered when we have to 'police' our tables when alcolholic drinks are ordered.

One server that I work with once waited on a police officer,(not in uniform) eating with his daughter. The daughter ordered an alcoholic drink. When the server asked for her ID, the daughter said it was in the car. The server refused to serve alcohol to her. The officer became enraged and threw a fit, calling the server several derogatory names, stating that he was an officer and she'd better serve his daughter. After about ten minutes of the officer's tantrum, the daughter went to the car to get her ID. When she showed the server, she was 22. The server was stiffed on her tip.

If he looked young enough to where you were doubting the legality of his age, you were right to do it. I'm 38, and I'd take it as a compliment if I was asked for my ID. I was still being asked for it quite a lot when I was 35. Apparently since then I've started looking my age. Or people are just starting to recognize me every where I go, cuz I haven't been ID'd in a few years. .

Hell no you weren't wrong. I was a cashier for 15 years and I carded everyone. Don't let the jerk get to you. The one person you don't card will be under aged and you will be screwed and I don't mean it in the pleasant sense of the word, you know I am right.

You were absolutely not wrong for asking for identification from this man! He should have been flattered that you asked.

Bottom line, you're the cashier which makes you the one taking the fall if someone's not of age. We use to have a sign over our register which read, "In God we trust... All other we I.D."

No. That is your job.

In New Jersey, there is no law that says you must sell tobacco or liquor to those legal of age. However, there is a law that says you must card everyone.

If he has a problem with it, so be it. It is his problem, not yours. If anything, the 40 year old should take it as a compliment.
