It really all dependes on what you plan to use it for. There are touring kayaks built for going straight on open water for long trips and there are short, agile boats for whitewater use. There are 'tweeners that try to get the best of both wolrds and do a decent job if you're just a recreational kayaker. Then once you narrow down the type you need, you can go relatively inexpensive and get a plastic boat or you can spend more and get fiberglass and kevlar andall sorts of other stuff. Talk to someone at an REI or other store and get some advice. Maybe see if someone in your area rents boats so you can try before you buy.
