I always thought that the person who comitts suicide is braver than I am. I mean I can't imagine holding a gun to my own head and pulling the trigger. Does anyone view suicide as simply an illness?

They are viewed as cowards because they can't face the problems they have in their life and kill themselves to escape.

I believe that it is not just the general public that views suicide as an escape...it is generally agreed that those who commit suicide are trying to escape their troubles (Not counting the 'cry for help' attempts). It's not necessarily bravery that is required to pull the trigger, just a firm belief that what you are doing will make your situation better.
I do not think suicide is an illness. I think it can result from depression, which is an illness (in some cases) or a string of bad things happening to one.
(Have to say it)
It is ALWAYS better to talk to someone about your problems than end your life. There is no problem that time cannot solve. If it helps, don't go to school or work for a few days, or go to a friend's house if you don't trust yourself alone. But your life is your greatest gift - protect it.
People, i believe, think suicide is cowardly because they condemn the idea of bailing on *everything* and not pushing through. Partially because they may want to do that, but have convinced themselves it isn't the best way. If they allow themselves to think the suicide's way is the best, they make life harder for themselves.

The band "The Spill Canvas" puts it the best:
We all flirt with the tiniest notion
Of self-conclusion in one simplified motion
You see the trick is that you're never supposed to act on it
No matter how unbearable this misery gets
"Self Conclusion" - The Spill Canvas

Peace,

Yes it is an illness, people who are well don't kill themselves. I don't believe it is an easy escape, and I believe the person is not a coward, they are depressed. I have been depressed before and have looked at suicide in the way you are describing but when I came out of my depression I saw clearly and I realized that committing suicide has nothing to do with being brave and it has everything to do with being depressed. I could easily say being brave means facing your problems not running away from them but even that is not true for someone who is depressed, attempts suicide and succeeds because they are not well enough to know how to help themselves. The people I knew who killed themselves got so depressed all they could see was despair and there was no getting better. When that was not true, they could have gotten better. That is why when someone is depressed or is starting to have the symptom's of depression they need to tell someone right away before it gets worse.

Suicide is resorted to by people who can not control their mind and emotions, and/or their body and pain sensations. The key to either situation is to gain control of the mind. here is how.....

_________________________

Since you are considering suicide you need to get a grip on your mind/emotions. How does the mind work?

1. You think of the desired thing.
2. Your attachment for it deepens.
3. Your desire to have it increases.
4. The obstacles to getting it loom larger.
5. Your frustration mushrooms.
6. Your hope evaporates.
7. You are left with hopelessness and hope against hope.
8. Your eating gets affected.
9. You lose weight.
10. Your mental composure get dimented.
11. You lose sleep.
12. You become unclean in your habits.
13. You pray for death, but it doesnt come.
14. You contemplate takng your own life.
15. You kill yourself.
16. Your life is wasted.
17. You suffer a worse condition in your next life.
18. You still dont get the thing.

Stop thinking of it.

Your attachment will lessen.

Your desire will abate.

The obstacles will shrink (and maybe go away on their own).

Your frustration melts away.

Your hope for a better way of life grows moment by moment.

You enjoy nice meals again.

You start looking better.

You are happier.

Your get good sleep at night.

You take care of yourself.

You count your blessings and embrace life.

You make your contribution to society.

You live a worthwhile life.

Your next life is better.

You might still get the thing!

When your emotions get the better of you and throw you into a hellish condition, then you need to use your intelligence to analyze the situation and pull yourself out.

You will do it.

Let me know how it turns out.

Hope this helps.

I don't think of it as being cowardly as opposed to living and being brave. I think of it in terms of not being in one's right mind. It's a cliche, but suicide is a permanent solution to a temporary problem. A person is so caught up and overwhelmed by sadness, stress, worry, whatever that they make a decision which will not only end their own life, but virtually destroy their families and friends. Suicide is not a rational act. The only circumstances under which I believe suicide makes any sense are if somebody is terminally ill and wants to end their suffering/pain, or if they've murdered somebody or done something equally horrible (child molesting, for example). Those situations might warrant suicide.

The simpleton will pass judgement, but a man of understanding knows that you cannot possibly know whats going on in the minds of these mostly sick people. Its not my place to say what is right or wrong, I just feel sorry for the family and the person themself and I hope the Lord will have mercy on them. What kind of person name calls dead people? they might as well go to the funeral and take a piss on their grave.

It is an easy escape, but it also takes a lot of guts to take your own life. I think a lot of people look down on suicides b/c of their religious beliefs more than anything. I don't think it's an illness.

this is a hard question.Yes I do believe that suicide is a type of illness as 99 per cent of people who choose to take their own lives had severe depression.

I don't know why people think of it as that way. Probably because they never have been there. I have and I know other people don't see it that way, so I stopped telling people about my suicidal thoughts because they'd think I was some lazy fraidy cat.

They are looked upon as cowards, however it takes a lot of courage to commit suicide. You can only feel sorry for them, because they couldn't find any other way out.

it's called the cowards way out because suicide is just running away. A brave person stands up to the challenges of life, a coward runs away.
