Many churches have re-written their music to say "God" rather than "He", but only until recently have societies begun to look at authority figures as being anything other than male. Back in Bible times, men were the leaders of their households, and leaders in society. It's only natural then that Jesus would call God the "Father", reflecting the culture of the time.

No one truly knows if God is indeed male or female. Not doubting the validity of the Bible here, but there are numerous examples in the Bible itself that insinuate that it was written by man in a time where men were clearly considered superior, and many other versions were written afterwards where this stigma was still the case. That could have had something to do with God coming to be known as a male. God could be androgynous for all we know. I don't think whether God is a man or woman really matters.

In Judaism there is actually a belief that God has both female and male elements. Where the female element is the embodiment of compassion and the male element is the embodiment of justice.
I think most scripture over-generalize the notion of a God and mix it with the ideology of a human ruler. I think there is a distinction between a human ruler and a divine entity who is considered as the creator of this universe. Having said that, it is more common [within the Judeo Christian history] to see men possessing more control and power (i.e. more male rulers) than females. This might have influenced the people composing the bible to make masculine references to their God.

Because of what a bunch of men who were threatened by the original conception of the female goddess set in motion thousands of years ago. In the first place, in the earliest "pagan" religions, God was thought of as a female birthing the universe. This did not sit well with the early leaders of several world religions, so they passed down the edict that God was officially a male. It got written into both the Old Testament and the Christian New Testament, and there you are. Men have been trying to run things ever since. After all, the Bible tells us so!

He is referred to as Father because of the attributes that are associated with the male such as provider, and protector. God is neither male or female. God is a spirit. He made man in his image meaning his attributes, but man wasn't complete because he didn't represent all of the attributes of God and woman was designed to complete the whole. God not being male or female, but a spirit with the attributes of both male and female which represents the whole character of God.

According to the Bible, GOD is a "Spirit" -- neither male nor female. Nevertheless, the writers of Scripture were led to refer to GOD as "He/Him/His" -- apparently the strong traits usually associated with maleness are descriptive of GOD's strength.
Additionally, as stated by another -- Jesus (GOD made flesh; God incarnate) came as a man. It gets technical at this point, but it seems that the sin nature is passed on by males (rather than females -- hence, Mary's virgin birth resulted in Jesus being born without a sin nature.) As one man (Adam) brought sin into the world, so by one Man (Jesus) is the forgiveness of sins made possible (Romans 5).
Hope that helps a bit!

It must be that when the concept of "God" was created, it was created by MAN. As back then Man was more credible, reliable, and the strongest of the human species. It helped other humans identify POWER and FEAR as Male. I think if the concept of "God" was created female, religion would have died because people would have talked back to it, disrespected it, slapped it, etc etc. However, when i percieve nature in it's entireity, i refer to it as MOTHER NATURE and not GODLY. So in a sense the world in which we live in is merely female to me & not male. The male part was just a mere delusion created by mankind to help other mankind understand a supernatural concept.
Thanks for asking, have an earthy day!
