My finance and I are having a discussion about this. I think that you can get pregnant at ANY point in time, he however, does not?

And what are the chances of getting pregnant when NOT using a condom, if someone pulls out?

Obviously, he and I bump heads on this subject.
So, any help would be great, thank you. :)

The only time a woman is not ovulating is a brief period from the onset of menstruation (i.e. during the early days just after menarche), during pregnancies and shortly after and just before menopause; on all other occasions, women are ovulating as long their ovaries are intact.

The body behaves as if it is getting ready for implantation of a fertilized ovum every time after the release of the ovum from the ovary. However, since the fertilization does not take place in most occasions, the thickened mucosa of your uterus sheds itself together with some bleeding. This occurs usually 14 days after ovulation.

So your chances of getting pregnant are around the time of ovulation; the sperm can be alive and kicking for about 3 days and the ovum itself can be alive for 3-4 days till it meets the sperm for its own fertilization activity; so approximately, there is a window of one week during which the pregnancy can occur.

Depending on the duration of your cycle, i.e. from the start of your periods in any month to the start of the periods on the following month, you can now calculate when it is safe (this is relative term only) in terms of not getting pregnant. It is believed that if your cycle is regular and of 28 days duration, it is okay to have sex for about 7 days from the onset of menses and then avoid sex for about 14 days and again the final 7 days before the onset of next periods may be considered safe.

There is of course a big IF; that is if your periods are regular. What if the month that you became pregnant, you had periods in 21 days or even 35 days; the whole calculation goes completely wrong; so, these are not absolutely fool-proof.

You need to ovulate in order to conceive. This takes place over a 2-3 day period each month. However, sperm can live inside you for up to 72 hours. So, if you don't want to get preg, make sure you can identify when you are going to ovulate (there are several ways) and refrain from having sex. Go to babycenter.com and look up preconception for more info on this.

"Pulling out" doesn't reduce the chances of getting pregnant. There is more than enough sperm in pre-ejaculation to get you preggers. Definitely use condoms, and try a second birth control as well. Hope that helps!

Your both kind of right. A woman must ovulate (produce an egg) in order for there to be something to fertilize by the sperm. In a typical 28-30 day menstrual cycle, you typically ovulate about day 14. The egg can only live for about 24 hours. The sperm, however, can live in the fallopian tubes from 3-5 days, just waiting for the egg to pop out. So, your window of fertility is usually day 9 to day 16. Your boyfriend is right that you can only get pregnant if you are ovulating, but because so many things from stress to illness can change the timing of your ovulation, you can ovulate anytime outside the 9-16 day period, and once that happens, you can get pregnant. Pulling out is not a good way to practice birth control, because success depends very much on the guy's ability to time the pulling out just right. If he's wrong, and leaks even a tiny amount of sperm, since he's producing hundreds of millions of sperm with each ejaculation, and it only takes one....well you do the math. I would be safe and use the condom each time. It's far easier to prevent a baby than raise one.

Baby-making basics

Conception is based on an intricate series of events.

Every month, hormones from your pituitary gland stimulate your ovaries to release an egg, or ovulate. This often happens around day 14 of the menstrual cycle, although the exact timing may vary among women or even from month to month.

Once the egg is released, it travels to the fallopian tube. If you want to conceive, Now is the time. The egg has about 24 hours to unite with a sperm. Since sperm cells can survive in your reproductive tract for two to three days, it's best to have regular sex during the days leading up to ovulation.

If the egg is fertilized, it'll travel to the uterus two to four days later. There it'll attach to the uterine lining. You're pregnant! Your periods will stop as your body begins to support the embryo.

If the egg isn't fertilized, it'll break down and you'll have your next period as usual.

There is also a chance of getting pregnant using the pull out method. Some men are better at pulling out than others. If your finance is a little slow on the pulling out :))) than sperm will get in there. Also there is sperm in the pre- ejaculate.
Since the egg only has twenty four hours to unite with sperm and sperm can live for up to three days inside you, you can not get pregnant at any point in time. There is only a few days out of every month you can get pregnant. What those days are for you depends on your cycle.

You can get pregnant any time of the month even on your period and the pull out method is really no protection as he releases pre c*m, that he can not feel & it contains sperm. However to get pregnant a woman must ovulate at some point that month, if she is not ovulating at all she can not get pregnant. Just educate him he is a typical male, hehe.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) affects 5 to 10 percent of women who are of child-bearing age. It is a hormonal disorder that causes obesity, acne, hair growth, and is one of the most common causes of infertility. Hormonal imbalances triggered by PCOS can cause infrequent ovulation and poor egg quality. Your obstetrician and reproductive endocrinologist will offer suggestions to help you get pregnant with PCOS if you are struggling to conceive on your own

there is really only a 24 period of time each month a woman can get pregnant.....

women ovulate once a month between the 13-15 day after your last period began....after the egg is released it is able to be fertilized anywhere from 12-24 hours...after that if the egg is not fertilized, the egg disintigrates...then you have to wait until next month when the egg is released again.

and as for the pull out method....it doesnt work.....the thin, clear, sticky fluids you see coming out of his penis when fooling around or havinf sex DOES contain sperms...its just not as concentrated as sperm in ejaclulation
