I moved to this city and got immediately involved in a long-time relationship with a jealous girl, so in the four years we dated, I didn't really have to opportunity to make friends. Now our relationship is over, and I don't know anyone. No one at my workplace is my age (I'm late 20's), and going out by myself makes me feel like the weird guy. I've even tried personals sites, but that's been fruitless. I'm not unattractive or socially awkward or anything. How do I meet people without seeming like I'm coming on too strong?

I'd appreciate some thoughtful and *mature* answers, please.

Go to a local bar/restaurant and sit with a bunch of people. Act like your cell phone is ringing, pick it up (especially if their is a lot of noise around you)...... then yell "What do you mean mom got stuck in the garbage can! (Every one will look at you) Then yell " Isn't this the second time? Does dad know? .....Well go down to the basement and tell dad to help! ( By now people are laughing at you) As you start to hang up say, " Okay, I'll talk to you later, bye Dave!" When you get off the phone, ask one of the women who are staring at you for a pen.....That's a great way to make friends:) I've done things like this before, people are more prone to hold a conversation with you if you are not serious...and I'm guessing that you are the serious type! Good luck!

Hang out in sports bars or your favorite places to eat. Become a regular so that you get to meet the people who work there and then move into talking to other people as they come into the establishment. Don't attack people as soon as they come in, just make casual conversation.
Another suggestion would be to go to the mall or the park and enjoy the scenery, or anywhere you might meet other single people. Find an interest and make friendly conversation.
Final call is to try the singles sites and chat lines again. Maybe there just weren't the type of people you were looking for at the time you tried previously. What ever you try I wish you luck!
BTW, where are you (city)? That may determine the types of places you should hang out!
