Because the 'rightness' and 'wrongness' of these things is written in our hearts by God himself. So even if you deny God, you know the difference between right and wrong.

Why would you want that sort of stuff to be to be socially, and morally acceptable? Ok so are you saying that you want these things to be morally/socially acceptable? If so, would you like that sort of stuff happening in your back yard? but your statement, FYI: people are making up their own rules they are not following God's rules! today, and, have done so, for centuries. Why do you think, is the world in such a mess? It comes from not following God's rules but making their own rules!!!!!!! where are u from Mars or Pluto? because obviously you do not know what is happening on this Planet. No offence but I am just wondering about your question it does not make sense to me, I mean when would you like to be murdered or when would you like your house robbed by a thief or drug addict?they do make their own rules you can have your own rules sure but as for me I would rather God's rules any day!!!!!!! At least I can know that I will get justice!!!!

Because these things hurt other people, which is the main reason that civilized countries have created laws against these things.

The rules (laws) that modern society follows are not from god(s). They are made by people. We don't need god(s) to tell us these things. It's common sense.

Most humans learn how to make friends (and enemies) by the time they are 6 or 7 years old -- far earlier than they are able to really comprehend "god(s)". Even animals behave according to a social code. Do you suppose that wolves got their code of ethics from some sort of wolf god, and ants from an ant god?

It is natural for all animals to develop a code of conduct. If the rules don't work, the species usually die out. At least among people, being civilized and compassionate seems to have certain survival advantages (namely, that people won't try to harm you, and may even protect you) such that these traits are highly evolved in us, perhaps even imbedded in our genes.

You noticed, that the rules of morality are generally very similar wherever the culture is. Take note that both Confucius and Christianity (have their proponents ever met?) developed a golden rule except that one stated it negatively "do not do unto others what you don't want others to do unto you" while the other stated it positively "Do unto others what you want others to do unto you." I forgot which one is which though.

There are culturally defined morals such as having more than one wife, or taking drugs as part of a religious ceremony. These might only be moral relatively speaking. But eventually as cultures meet each other, we may try to get one moral code after a series of debates and sincere reflection.

That is because people do think about it and decide what rules should be followed in order to make society livable. Even cannibals don't just eat each other. How on earth will they survive long enough to meet western civilization.

Hear this one in church did we?

Well, societies have alwasy had such rules and morals, long, long before Jehovah or Christ came up with them.

We could speak of evolution, showing that such behavior detracted from societies' ability to take care of itself.

We could point out that there were many other Gods and religions before Christ, that all had such rules, so the Christian God seems to be a Johnny come lately sort of God when it comes to morals.

And lastly, I would really like to show my disagreement with the idea of an addict being a moral issue. Drug or alcohol abuse is one thing. Addiction is quite another. Is an allergy a moral issue? Children who have allergies to food items often show their allergy by becoming addicted to those food items. Is that a moral issue?

Addiction is a medical condition in which the body generates an extreme craving for the specific substance. It is akin to that of someone dying of thirst trying not to drink from a frobidden pool of water.

People who are not addicted to substances can simply quit. My father was a two pack a day smoker who simply stopped when he realized how dangerous it was. Other people are simply tormented and unable to stop, going through hell trying to do so.

Trust me; Addiction and abuse are completly different things.

It is because our consciousness has evolved to understand cause and effect. Survival in this world has consequences based on everything we say and do. God doesn't have to be a part of that equation to understand this.

Your question about God's rules are so hypocritical because, you are making up your own rules as you ask the question. Why? It says in the Bible, no graven images so you shouldn't even be on the computer, let alone watching TV or going to see a movie.

I challenge you to go live with the Amish.

If you lived by God's rules, you would realize they are man's rules made up as society evolves in your world. They are rules that are re-assessed and then re written in order to adjust to societal changes in order to survive.

The Amish life style would drive you bananas because you have no idea how much freedom you really have compaired to God's rules. - That's if you really followed it to the letter.

Because all of these things can hurt other people. I follow these rules because I believe that it is not acceptable to hurt someone else, without a damned good reason (for example: lay one finger on my baby, with bad intentions, and you are going to get HURT). It has nothing to do with God, it has to do with the desire to be a good person, and for the sake of humanity. Oh, I know that because I don't fully believe in God, that I can't possibly have ANY morals, and all that jazz. Well, surprise, Christmas came early this year, there are actually atheist, and agnostics who are good people, And they do it all on their own, without the promise of a reward.

Well I was a drug addict for 20 years, and God was with me everystep of the way,My drug counselor didnt believe me so I doubt youll get it either and thats alright.I didnt steal, cheat, murder and if I didnt have the money I did without. you would have had to walked in my,or a drug addicts shoes to understand this.It sounds by your question that youve had some pretty bad dealings with us kind, but I was the exception,I kept Gods rules even when I wasnt following in his path.My use gave me promotions, raises, employee of the month, and I turned myself in( and at that moment to be sober cost me everything) and I let myself get caught because I said something to a non user and it stuck with me and made me change(with Gods help still) and that was" do the right thing" and I realized i wasnt. So your wrong

It is not socially or morally acceptable to be a cheater, thief, murderer or drug addict because they are wrong. People who don't believe in God do make up their own rules, seems they only have one rule. There is no God. Unfortunately for them, they still have to follow the laws of the land and there is a God and they will have to face Him one day.

Are you that dense? Hello! It is all about whether or not your actions have a direct negative effect on someone else. It isn't socially or morally acceptable to be a cheater because when you cheat you are hurting someone else - e.g. cheating on a spouse - you are deceiving someone you love, hurting them. It is not acceptable to steal for the same reason - you are hurting someone else by taking what was rightfully theirs. When you have an "addiction" it basically means that your need for something is interfering with your ability to function at your job, with your family, etc. So not only are you hurting yourself with an addiction, you are probably hurting those who love you (although I think a drug addiction is not evil or anything, it just isn't good for a person's functioning. Out of all these things it is probably the most socially acceptable). It isn't morally acceptable to be a murderer, because you hurt someone and took their life away, AND hurt everyone who loved that person.

Those of us who actually have critical thinking skills don't need God and an book to tell us what is right and wrong.

AND most of the people in prison are religious. Tell ya something???

2006-12-15 15:57:21 · answer #10 · answered by Anonymous · 2 2

Huh? In prison or in jail IT is socially acceptable to be almost anything--except a child killer or molester. Even the lowest of low lives have to draw the line somewhere. Most people in prison claim to follow one religion or another. Even believing in God they do make up their own rules. Of course that's also true of many who are not in prison but claim to follow God, ha ha. Its just that they don't get caught! .
