They are a bad deal. You're better off putting the money in a CD or money market and spending the interest on vacations anywhere you want to go. With a timeshare you have fewer choices.
And once you've bought a timeshare, don't ever try to sell it. You will get about 10% of what you paid for it. So if you want to buy one maybe you can find a good deal on one on that "secondary market"

I refuse to get a timeshare.
In most cases you can rent a timeshare space without buying it since timeshare venues need to fill up their spaces. My friend has timeshares and when we go on trips I typically can get a simular resort hotel for a cheaper price without the obligtions of a commitment.

no one owns a timeshare, the timeshare owns them...bigtime...
