I have restored the computer, which is a laptop. Used different brand disks, and cleaned drive.

Its likely a problem with the CD read/write head. Try clean it with a head cleaner CD and try.

Else check with a new CD writer or check your CD writer in some other PC.

Replace the CD writer.

The first step is to find out whether it is a software or hardware problem.

It is not clear whether your CDRW drive can read all CDRs including your own recorded disks.

If only the recording (burning) function has been disabled, just check if your problems started after you tried to duplicate a disk.

Some copyright disks have a nasty feature of disabling the recording function without a warning. I remember reading about it in T3 magazine last year but I cannot find my notes from that issue.

For the moment, I leave it at that. If I can find specific details, I will add further comments within the time available for answering.

have you burned tons of cd's??
it's possible the "life" has been exhausted from the burner and may be time to install a new one
try burning a cd that you bought - on someone else's computer to make sure the cd is not defective
