If you have clinical depression therapy doesn't help. People that don't have depression don't understand that. They think you just need to talk it out. But if you have depression your body doesn't work like other people's. You are missing the neurotransmitters others happily have. Your brain make up won't change with talk, just like you won't suddenly stop having cancer if you just snap out of it. I suffered from depression for many years and went to therapists etc. It was all a waste of time and happiness. I was in my late 30s before I found that medication was what I really needed. I take Effexor, but it wasn't until I tried others that didn't work for me. Effexor makes me feel human.

I think it depends on if you want it to help or not. Also, it depends on the type of therapist you have. I went into therapy about 5 years ago. I quit after 3 or 4 months because I didn't like my therapist. I felt that at times she was too pushy with me, and other times felt that she wanted me to be done quickly. I went back into therapy this year, and I love my therapist. This time it has helped a lot.

For me any type of therapy wasn't very useful. I had therapy over depression and it was horrible. Everyone wanted me to think happy thoughts---plus it made me feel so uncomfortable.

I've had therapy for various things...as a teenager, I went to therapy with my parents to learn better comunication skills. As an adult, I've seen a therapist for marriage counsiling...grief/loss counsiling after several miscairages. I've always found it useful. It's more of getting things out of your head and working through preoblems out loud. I also don't like to "burden" my friends with all of my stuff... so, setting it all out in front of a counselor worked for me. I felt i learned a lot of good coping skills.

I'm not a fan of it-I went to a therapist to help me with depression about my divorce and she had such a God complex that I never went back. I ended up doing better on my own and reading/dealing with it.

There are good ones out there, but too many have God complexes!!!
