If you understand the Bible, AS A WHOLE, you will see it is actually a full account of the nurture of a highly moral society based on faith AND reason.
God is an entity, a person, so it is difficult to answer your question in a way that satisfies the language you used when you asked. God is perfect and good. He has a plan for the salvation of man.
His Law is the truth and is filled with love for life, following the law, in unity with your fellow man, and all of mankind, will lead to a peaceful and joyful existence. <-And, you practically have to yield that if you have any humanist tendency. Note that I'm not talking about petty food laws and whatnot, that, while defensible, have little reason in our age. And other laws or ruling that lead to the point were the plan could come to fruition (destruction of peoples in the promised land, for instance).

God is the invisible force of incredible power and intelligence behind the "big bang". However, He has a physical form in the body of Jesus Christ, who said, amongst other sayings, "I and the Father are one", and "He who has seen me has seen the Father". As you seem to be genuinely interested, read more in John's Gospel. This Christmas secure eternal life with God by acknowledging the baby Jesus as God on earth.

Ok well I think that God is not a mighty male who is standing there in judgement of every soul. I also cannot think of god as a old man with a flowing white beard. And I dont think that given the size of this world in all its complexity that there is one God - but gods - groups of divine spirits that can help and guide for the good of this world. I also think that there is different levels of divine spirit and different ranges of guides and helpers all out there is the universe doing some good - good that goes unnoticed.

I would suggest reading a christian catechism to answer this question as best as as mortal men can. God can only be described by his attributes because we don't know what he is like except from the bible. A catechism will take a certain denominations beliefs and place them into an easy to read and memorize form. They are a culmination of the denominations interpretations of the bible. Here is a link to such a catechism: http://opc.org/sc.html

Although everyone's perception of God is different... In a word: LOVE
There is no true love here on Earth, only attachment. The yearning you feel in your heart for love is a long lost remembrance of the Divine Love you once felt from the Supreme Lord. The separation from God (often referred to as separation anxiety) causes us to search throughout our lives for the love we once felt, but the yearning will never be satisfied until we are reunited. When you are in touch with just a small part of God's love, it is so intense you can barely take it in. God is LOVE.

God is a perfected man in a perfected body. He is all knowing, all powerful, all wise, all loving. He is the father of our spirits and would like us to return home to him, thus he sent his eldest Son, Jehovah (aka Jesus), to make that possible and show us the way. Jesus is now also a God, having been resurrected and inheriting all the powers and knowledge of his Father, and Jesus said we can inherit the same if we are rightous and obey God's commandments (which are given out of love and to protect us, not to hinder or stifle us).
There's a lot more to know about God, but it would take me hours to type. Just trust that He knows you by name, loves you, and hopes you will come to know Him as well.

God is a spirit/ghost type thing. He has a physical form called Jesus. He is made of 3 parts- Father, Son (Jesus), and the Holy Ghost (the conscience of God that lives in a believer). Although God is sexless, he is masculine in his qualities and therefore referred to as a he, though he is actually neither.

God is love. God is compassion and wisdom. He is the creator of all things. When you have relationship with him, you are compelled to WANT to live as He would have you live.
I know it's no small feat to describe Him. The only thing I could add is that we are not marrionettes for Him to play with. He gave us free will and in his wisdom, He don't mess with it.

Then the LORD came down in the cloud and stood there with him and proclaimed his name, the LORD. 6 And he passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, "The LORD, the LORD, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness, 7 maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin. Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children and their children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation."
