Every so often someone here asks the question about photography contests and I react the same way, "WHY do people want to enter such no-win situations?"

First, let me explain. There ARE legitimate photography contests out there. There are also many photography contests that are scams. How can you tell the difference?

The legitimate contests and the scams are run pretty much the same way... some charge entry fees, some don't; both require that you surrender your copyrights; both have prizes awarded (for 1st, 2nd and 3rd and often with 4th, 5th and other prize awards, too). What's the catch?

Well, if I were to announce a contest, and legitimately award 10 prizes, where I keep ALL the images from the contest winners and ALL those other images that were entered into the "contest," I could later sell these to stock companies or to postcard or to book companies seeking images, or whatever, for photos I did not take but whose copyrights are now mine to make money from... and I'd have thousands of images to sell, maybe a few hundred thousand photos from talented amateurs (beginners and advanced) and even some talented semi-pros and all I had to do was award maybe $2,000 but in selling all the images I could possibly make anywhere from $20,000 to $100,000 or more... so, where's the scam? YOU DECIDE!

on line is probably the best place to look, but make sure you read the fine print. A lot of contests require the photographers to give up all their rights to the photograph.Which means they can do what ever they want with it after the contest with out compensation to the photographer.

NOne of those. You look weird in all of them. Smile...dont do that thing with your eyes and mouth...and nose (sorry just my opinion). Think happy thoughts to smile pretty! I mean cmon, in one your touching your own boob. Teen Vogue is not going to even look at them if you send that one. Take another one. Dont do any funky angle. Just do straight, dont make weird faces. Good luck! What is the contest?
