The human papillomavirus (HPV) causes warts, including genital warts, and may cause cancerous changes in the cervix. HPV is spread by direct contact.

There are more than 100 known types of HPV.

Some HPV types cause genital warts. In women, certain types of HPV increase the risk of cervical cancer. Sometimes the only sign that a woman is infected with HPV is an abnormal Pap test result.

Other types of HPV cause common, plantar, filiform or flat warts, and some genital warts. These types of warts are not cancerous.

There is no known cure for HPV. Most warts go away without treatment within 2 years; however medications and treatments are available to help warts disappear more quickly. HPV remains in the body with or without treatment for visible warts, so warts may come back.

It's the Human Papiloma Virus. It's spread by sexual contact, and ts danger lies in its ability to cause certain types of cervical cancer. Women with HPV will have abnormal results on their pap tests, and results help health care providers decide if further tests or treatment are necessary.

There is no "cure" for HPV infection, although in most women the infection goes away on its own. The treatments normally provided are directed to the changes in the skin or mucous membrane caused by HPV infection, such as warts and pre-cancerous changes in the cervix.

There is a HPV vaccine now that can be used to prevent contraction of four different types HPV, and thus prevention of the cervical cancer that could result. However, it does not protect against all types of HPV, so it will still be important for women who have had the vaccine to get regular pap tests.

HPV (human papillomavirus)

· HPV causes genital warts and abnormal cells on the cervix which can lead to cervical cancer if left untreated

· It can also cause cellular changes that can lead to vaginal, vulvar, anal, and less commonly penile and oral cancers

· Most people will get HPV at some point in their lives, and experts estimate the lifetime risk of acquiring HPV to be between 70 and 90%, depending on what you read

· Most people do not show any symptoms

It is treatable, but you have to catch it early as it can turn into cancer.

It can be dangerous. Certain types of HPV can result in cervical cancer. It is the disease that produces genital warts, in some cases. It is not curable, per se. Once you have it, it always can manifest itself again. If you don't have it yet, there is now a vaccine for it that you can probably ask your ob/gyn about.
