whenever it isn't an emergency.

It's almost always inappropriate to interupt. When you do it, even for good reason, the person you interupted is not listening to you but rather focusing on the fact that you interupted. It is not only rude, but ineffective. Take a deep breath, really listen, and reply after ample time and space was given once they have finished. The only exception I could imagine where this would not apply, is if someone is spewing hatred, racist, sexist, ect.. comments. Putting an end to disgusting behavior supercedes the rule of not interupting.

The thing is that whether the time when a person contributes to a conversation is considered an interruption or not depends on whether it was judged inappropriate. That is, if you say something and I think it's inappropriate, it's an interruption. So it's sort of a circular definition.

But sometimes the content of what you have to say is so important that even though people feel interrupted, they are glad that you did. An extreme example of this would be if you joined a conversation by saying, "Watch out! A giant ball of fire is coming this way!"

Highly situationally dependent. With friends, it's probably OK, but it depends on if it irritates your friends.

At work, it's best to wait, especially in meetings or with a supervisor. Write down the thought and ask to revisit it.

With people you are getting to know, I think it's best to avoid it, but again, depends on the situation and the environment.

Personally, I'm an interrupter, and I've yet to really have anyone but my boyfriend complain about it. But he interrupts me, so I just blink at him, and then we move on.

Interrupting is only inappropriate when the person you're interrupting thinks that their farts don't stink. Especially when people ramble on and on and don't let you get a word in edgewise.

It's always inappropriate, but maybe when your house is on fire it's ok, but that's about all!

I suggest not interrupting unless extremely important. It is so rude.

When I'm talking to somebody, and my kid wants to know if he can eat something/go outside/whatever. That's inappropriate.

When it's not urgent.

interrupting is ALWAYS rude. Unless you are interrupting an argument/fight by trying to make it stop.
