Yes. Tell the truth no matter what. A police officer's credibility is all he/she has sometimes.
Minor stuff in the background is no big deal if you're honest about it. It shows you're human and learn from your mistakes.
If you seriously wonder if you should tell the truth, I encourage you to seek another career.

When taking a polygraph test, if the question of theft is brought up, you should tell the truth, for it will detect if you are lying. If this is for a job position, if you have made an impression they like, they will give u a chance to explain.

Yes. For employment you will want to admit and explain it.
For criminal investigations, listen to your lawyer and never consent to one. I didn't listen and took one to "clear myself" and got royally screwed because, even though I did not take any money, I felt responsible, as it was under my care. All a polygraph is, is a modern "dunking stool" to torment you into a confession. I was charged with grand theft by a grand jury and it cost me all of my kid's and my savings (no college for them now) before my case was dismissed for lack of evidence. Bought my lawyer a nice new car, though. By the way, I'm a cop.

Don't do it. They are not reliable, some questions asked have nothing to do with the charge or legality, & you have absolutely nothing to gain by taking one. If you get anxious easily, your results are likely to be called inconclusive. Most of your friends & family will think it means you failed it, which is not true.
I took one once to prove my innocence.. I wasn't guilty, & the test was inconclusive. I was never charged, but the results of the test still haunt my personal life.

why are you taking a poly? If it is for a job then it will matter. They will ask you if you have ever stolen anything. IF this is your only offense, you might want to let your potential employer know of it. Then they can ask if you ever stole after that.

Tell the truth for the questions asked and you'll be alright. If you lie the test will catch you and not make you look good.

EVERYTHING matters. You may get a chance to explain but your conscience doesn't have a "sealed record" option and if you did something wrong EVER, then you should be honest about it.

This depends on how long ago this happened. I mean, if you are now 17, yes it matters.
