Statistics show that out oif four of your children 1 will have it, 1 will be free of it totally and 2 will be carriers and pass the illness to their children.

There is some statistical possibility that your child could have the illness. The percentage figures vary a lot, depending on what source you read.

Are you sure that your husband's diagnosis was correct. People don't usually "suffer from schizophrenia a few years back" and then be well. If he is able to keep his illness under control with medications, then he is one of the luckiest men on earth. I wish I was so fortunate - I have a life-long history of mind illness with many ups and downs. i also have two biological children that are having pretty normal lives. Both of them have developed bipolar disorder (like their Dad :( ). Both have full and productive lives.

A child can have a rich and full life even if that child has a mind illness. Each year, treatments and medications get better and better. Would you make the decision about whether or not to have a child based on the possibility that the child might get cancer, or diabetes, or get hit by a truck? Hey, things happen to all of us. Don't make your life decisions based on "what if's".

I certainly would wish your child the best health possible.

My mother-in-law was seriously ill with schizophrenia. My husband and I met with a specialist to see what our chances were to have a child with the same disease. He said our chances were the same as anyone else. But then again we were told that children of a sick parent had a 50% chance, their children had a 25% chance and it just keeps declining from there. It would be best for you to consult with your husbands physician because we were told this information 30 years ago. We had 2 daughters who have never exhibited signs of schizophrenia. It's wonderful that your husband has it under control, it can be a terrible disease. I pray that things work out well for you.

There are different types of schizophrenia and many possible causes. The generally agreed on hereditary risk is 10% if one parent has the illness. What type does your husband have? It seems that the disorganized type is more hereditary than other types. Bipolar Disorder seems to have a stronger familiar pattern than schizophrenia.

Hi I am a child of a mentally ill person and I also have mental illness if that what you would like to call it. I also have two daughters and only one has some of them and the other has none but you are acting like it is this really bad thing. And it is not . It is just like anything else in life you may get from your family you take stuff for it that makes you better. Are you asking because if he could give it to your baby are you not going to have one then that is wrong. someone would love to be you. To be able to just be able to have on ill or not

My cousin suffer from this disease and the doctor said that it's the mother who carry the gene. Her kids was on high risk because she carry the gene.
It was 10 years ago they are OK for now (thank God)
Now, some doctors say that this disease is mostly environmental

Look at your husband family, was it his mother or grand mother( sometime people have the disease but keep it under control.)

You could get a Genetic counselling

I work for a nutitional company that primarily works with individual who suffer with various Mental Health conditions. I also have dealt with mental illness in my own family. My x-husband is Schizophreic and as I checked into it I was able to trace it back 7 generations where it was passed from mother to son and from father to daughter. My own daughter is diagnosed ADHD/Bipolar( with hallucinations) and was on medications for over 6 years. She is now taking a nutritional supplement instead of the meds. I feel that by her working from the root of the problem(chemical level) that this may prevent it from continuing down the line. I hope this is helpful and if you would like more info on the Nutritional side please email me at tams3472@yahoo.ca

You can look it up on google. and see like the chances of have a baby with the same disorder. I mean just type into google schizphrenia. [obviously] and see what comes up.
I do know people with schizophrenia though. that have had children. and there children did not have the disorder. so. you can think about that.

Hope that helps.

Child of a parent with it has a 10% chance of getting it. Child of normal parents has less than 1% chance of getting it. I met two people while in group therapy who had it. Not a very nice disease.

Seriously, This is something that although genetic , cannot be entirely predictable......The fact is that it is hereditary.......Talk to a psychatrist for real help.......some forms of this disease are not as debilitating as other forms are but i don't think you can , "breed it out" , sorry no intent to be rude......
Ultimately, it is your decision to have kids.......What does your husband think ?
I have had experience with schizophrenics in treatment areas and also in the defense side of criminal courts...... strict compliance is needed to help the symptoms but as you already know ,there is no cure.......
Good Luck to you and your husband........STAY MED COMPLIANT !
