Heres another phlebotomy question What is the best vein to use on an obese patient?

I find using the vein in the antecubital space the best (space on inner arm where elbow is). If it is hard to locate one there the back of the hand is good, the under part of the forearm is good, if the patient is not a diabetic the i have used the feet to get blood, I have done arterial sticks to get blood and as a last resort i have had to use the vein in the neck

Of course every person will be different. I mean, think of all the skinny people? Some people have great veins in places where others don't and vice versa.

Throughout my phlebotomy experience, I have never had trouble with people based solely on their weight, only their veins.

I';ve noticed with enough tension and a good tourniquet, you can pretty much get the arm everytime.

I am a phlebotomist, I find that the best vein is the ones on the back of the hand......if they have none there, I usually check the back of the arm instead of the usual place. Its hard sometimes I know. Ive been doing it for 4 years now. Oh yeah forgot to say, weight is not a prob, but sometimes its a factor.

I'm obese and they usually don't have a problem finding my vein in the middle of my arm-and if they do, they usually just beat the hell outta my arm until they get it...lol
