I have a Bissell steam cleaner and it hooks up to my sink. My boiler is set at 140 degrees and I have had no problems. You don't really need anything hotter than that. Boiling temp. would definitely be a problem.

Boiling water is usually too harsh for the carpets underlay, and could break it down, making your carpet suddenly look too big. Warm or even hot, but not boiling is fine, and does a better job of cleaning, but make sure you get as much water out of the carpet as possible. Sometimes, when I've had a light colored carpet with quite a bit of traffic dirt, I'll put a small amount of bleach in with the detergent. Like a quarter cup per gallon. Brightens everything up, just make sure you don't use more than this.

My carpet cleaner says I can use hot water but NOT to use boiling water. If you're just cleaning by hand I think it's fine....as long as you have a way to suck the water back out of the carpet. Because, if you leave it in there, it won't dry fast enough and you'll have mildew develop. This will rot out your carpet and probably not smell very good. Are you doing general cleaning or spot cleaning?

No, never boiling, but only because I doubt the rubber bushings nor the plastic reservoirs in the cleaners could handle the heat.

You do not want to use heat on dirt. It makes it set.
The best way to care for your carpet is to vacuum it frequently (daily). If that doesnt work or you want to freshen the carpet, please do not use heat.
