Sin is a deliberate thought, word, deed, or omission contrary to the eternal law of God.
A mortal sin is a grave infraction of the law of God that destroys the divine life in the soul of the sinner (sanctifying grace), constituting a turn away from God. For a sin to be mortal, three conditions must be present: grave matter, full knowledge of the evil of the act, and full consent of the will.
Most of the sins we commit are venial sins. Venial sin is a sin which does not destroy the divine life in the soul, as does mortal sin, though it diminishes and wounds it. Venial sin is the failure to observe necessary moderation, in lesser matters of the moral law, or in grave matters acting without full knowledge or complete consent.
However consistent unrepentant venial sins can slowly destroy your relationship with God and become mortal sin.
People die all the time with venial sins on their conscience and they will go to heaven.
But if you die in the state of mortal sin then you will go to hell.
With love in Christ.

Catholics believe in three types of sin: Original Sin, Mortal Sin and Venial Sin.
If you die with original sin or mortal sin on your soul, you go to Hell. If you die with just venial sins on your soul, you go to Purgatory. You stay there until your sins are purged, then you go to Heaven.
Original Sin is washed away with Baptism -- which is why Catholics baptize babies. As a child, I was taught that there were three things that had to be true for a sin to be a Mortal Sin:
1. It had to be a grievous sin
2. You have to know it is a grievous sin
3. You have to do it despite the fact that you know it is wrong.
Protestants do not generally believe in Purgatory and believe that sin is sin. There is Scripture that backs the Catholic view -- but it is in the part of the Bible that martin Luther edited out of the Bible -- which is why Protestants believe differently.

The others have already answered most of your question, but there's a bit more to add:
Because humans are so complex, emotional, and just plain wacky, they sometimes do things that they rather would not have done.
One thing leads to another, and pretty soon, you have made a class A mess of your life, and are steeped in very serious sin.
God is the only one who can judge one who dies in such a state, mainly because it's impossible for us to truly know which and how many sins we intentionally committed, and where we originally left the "path of righteousness".
That's one of the reasons why Catholics are in the habit of confessing all sins to priest on a regular basis, so they can benefit from another, unbiased perspective, and be alerted to "trends" that might be taking them in the wrong direction.
So, while murdering someone is OBJECTIVELY a mortal sin, capable of getting someone judged to hell for eternity, God might know of extenuating circumstances that might SUBJECTIVELY lessen the severity of that sin, and allow one to escape the most severe of judgments.
Let's all hope that God's mercy exceeds his justice.

Religious leaders of all faiths, in designated the Catholics, positioned guilt journeys on younger boys who consider masturbation (but they quite often have their method with more youthful boys as has been quite often publicized). That is one reason faith and hypocrisy have an greatly close dating. Men and females will will let you recognize that God gave you a quality little play factor and so cross forward and use it to delight yourself. Science studies have released relatively plenty of health advantages of time-commemorated ejaculation. There's absolutely no rationale to think responsible approximately committing a sin by way of masturbation. Keep in brain, faith and sexual delight seem to be at reverse ends of the dimensions. And to such a lot men and women, homosexuality is a disgusting culture. It does not matter what sort of sin historic men suppose it's. Masturbation should not be a sin.

mortal sin is sin against the holy spirit, other that qualify is murder, the seven deadly sins. if you are unaware of commiting sin then you would go unpunished as you truly didn't know you did something wrong. in theology you would go to hell if you didn't confess and repent of the sin. either way the decision will be made by god, and no one can say this person or that person will to heaven/hell, only god knows that. but in our teachings and our understnading you would go to hell so confess and repent when and as often as you can.

A mortal sin is one in which you totally, and with full knowledge that your action is a serious offense against God, decide to go ahead and do it anyway. It's like, " I don't care how bad it is, I'm gonna do it". You really turn your back on God. He doesn't turn His back on you . You choose to reject God.
God can forgive any sin. We can get into all sorts of "IF" questions, but it all boils down to the fact that only God knows the true state of our souls. He knows us better than we know ourselves. I think that we probably condemn ourselves to hell by our total rejection of God and His mercy. He doesn't want anyone in hell.
