Are you willing to spend some money? According to both PC Magazine and PC World Magazine, the best antispyware program is Webroot's SpySweeper. Which is the best antivirus program is not so clear. According to PC World Magazine it is BitDefender. Other good choices include: Norton Antivirus, F-Secure Antivirus and Trend Micro PC cillin. Free products aren't on par with their commercial counterparts. However, Windows Defender is a top notched antispyware application, free to all Windows users. Spybot Search & Destroy and Lavasoft's Ad Aware are good choices as well. As for free antivirus software, try Antivir, Avast or AVG. You can find all these free programs at http://www.filehippo.com

You need active protection, which most programs make you pay for.....

Spyware Terminator has an active guard, and it's a great program!
There is no adware/malware on the installation.

You can also try Avorax Shield, which has an active shield.

For "on demand" scans, try Adaware Se.....

I very much like Zone Alarm Security Suite (www.zonealarm.com) if you can pay something or AVG Antivirus if you want something pretty good for free. Good luck.
