my grandfather used to tell me stories about how a Japanese samurai sword were so sharp that they could cut through a machine gun barrel. then i saw myth buster do a thing on it but they did it all wrong they heated the barrel up for 30mins then used a replica sword to try. the fact that the gun barrels were constantly heated up and cooled over and over again would had made them very brittle. so just heating the barrel up for 30min wasn't accurate and any body that knows swords that if a samurai sword didn't cut through dead bodies it was junk. so how could they use a replica and think they would get the same results?

because they have little knowledge of metallurgy and even less knowledge of how to properly cut with a katana. i saw that episode and dismissed it as bullshit. also they didnt test a khukuri or a falcata, which are very effective cutting tools.

My father was a prisoner of war for a while in a Japanese internment camp at the beginning of the war in China and he said that sometimes they would set up a run about 60 feet long with wooden sides and tell Chinese prisoners that if they could run past the end of the run they would be free. Then two Japanese officers would use their swords to decapitate them when they came running thru the end of the run. He said there were bets on how far the bodies would run before collapsing. But I didn't know the specifics of the swords cutting thru a gun barrel as I don't watch TV. Also, I don't know how much of my fathers' stories are true. He is 86 now and his memory is not what I would call totally functional.

They used a replica because they couldn't find any one stupid
enough to lend them one and they couldn't afford to buy one.

I don't really know if a real Samurai sword could slice through
a machine gun barrel or not. What I do know for a fact is that
if you drop a silk scarf on to the upturned blade, the weight of
the scarf is enough to cut the scarf in half.

MERRY CHRISTMAS and have a nice day.

Thank you very much, while you're up!!

1. Later in the episode, they did heat and cool the barrel multiple times.
2. I don't believe they did use replica blades.
3. They got the barrel to break, but not the clean slice they were looking for.

They're called stories for a reason..as in "made up". Even by your own hypothesis, if the barrel is brittle a smack is going to shatter it, NOT cut through it. A wooden club would do the same thing.

what did they do incorrect? you in no way somewhat requested a query. the try on mythbusters looked enormously sturdy to me. i think of your grandfather would have exaggerated somewhat. i doubt there have been very many samurai sword on the battlefields of WWII

Obviously they did not know the difference, and did not consult an expert.
