They have to choose it on their own. That being said, you can have an honest discussion with them about how you're concerned for their health, etc.

If you are very serious about this I have a really good plan for you. Call your local hospital and see if you can arrange a visit with a person or persons who are dying from lung cancer and are VERY VERY ill. Buy some nicotine patches, then tell your parents that you want to take them out somewhere special. Take them to the hospital so they can see in PERSON what their future is. After your visit, give them the patches and tell them, that you won't tell them what to do, but basically they have two choices: Quit, or they will become ill and tell them "I'm sure I'll really be happy visiting you in the hospital on your birthdays- sounds like a lot of fun doesn't it?"
My mom had a heart attack and down the hall from her was a person dying from lung cancer. The stench was nauseating and it made my dad quit after hearing this woman hack and caugh and moan for the week my mom was on that floor.

Tell them that smoking really hurts the body. You love them and apparently your grandfather didn't want them to smoke. Tell your parents about the wish. Tell that you love them and would be very sad if anything happened because of the smoking problem.

Unfortunately, my mom smokes as well and it hurts me when she does. I've tried everything and now I really can't convinve to quit due to the fact that she lives far away. Anyway, I think you should research on books, videos, or articles, and show her the consequences. Explain to her why you want her to quit and try to help her find method(nicorette gums) or whatever there is that can help her quit. Don't give up! This will be a tough battle...

Talk to them nicely. Tell them how much their smoking upsets you, and maybe it makes you feel like they don't care enough to quit. Tell them that smoking will cause cancer and that may seem ages away, but before they know it they'll be having to do chemo. Tell them that that no matter how hard it is to quit, they must keep trying because it's ruining their lives.

You can't really help your parents, but you can let them know how bad smoking is. My dad was smoking, and I told him how bad smoking is, he stopped smoking!! It might work with your parents, too!? Also, go to the internet to prove it..

Make them watch that commercial when the guy is saying, "you don't always die from tobacco",
It worked for my sister because I have an aunt who just recently had a whole put in her throat due to cigarette smoking

give them the facts, tell them why it's important to you, and hope for the best. if you have heard of body worlds, a museum exhibit- you should take them to that too. it's touring the country and shows the damage smoking causes the body.

Keep giving them info on how deadly they are and pray for them . Sorry we can't change or make anyone do anything it has to be in them already to want to do it. God does the big stuff. Keep loving and supporting them not nagging them to stop that will get on their nerves and not want to be around you.
