I have heard and read very good things about the free version of AVG Anti-Virus available at:
http://www.grisoft.com/doc/products-avg-anti-virus-free-edition/lng/us/tpl/tpl01
If you are willing to pay a small amount of money, I would suggest Zone Alarm as a very good security suite, available at:
http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/catalog/catalog_main.jsp?dc=12bms&ctry=US&lang=en
Good luck.

Try filehippo (http://www.filehippo.com/software/antivirus/). It has a long list of many popular free antivirus software programs. The list contains free trials or free for life products. The 3 most popular free antivirus programs are: Antivir, Avast and AVG. All 3 programs are great. They are totally free for life. They offer both real time protection and on demand scanning.

Yes you can buy one at a computer store. Also, all antiviruses work, but if you don't keep them updated the will not work. Most computers come with the so called best antivirus software. Now that would be Norton antivirus

It will depend on what is wrong with your computer. It is possible that your infection cannot be fixed with just antivirus or antispyware. You may need to post a HJT log and have an expert review and make suggestion on the proper way to defect the infection.

Rkill isn't an Antivirus software, it really is a large device for eliminating/cleanup after a equipment is already contaminated although.. in case you want an excellent AV software Google Avira its impressive and loose! i have used it for over 8 years on both my laptops and private computer its large. Its the actually AV i understand of that makes use of heuristic scanning to locate/get rid of/ward off new and former virus's.

I think that Windows Defender works along the lines of antivirus. It's new so I'm not sure about it. Go to microsoft.com and check it out.
cleanup.com helps with spyware and stuff as does adaware and spybot.
