Because of the domestication of dogs, they are no longer as familiar with howling as they once were. Way way back when dogs were wolves and they weren't domesticated, they would howl to each other to communicate with each other - to signal to their pack and to assist in reunification of the pack. You will often hear dogs nowadays howl when they smell a female dog in heat, and you will often hear the female howl back!! (happens with my breeding doggies all the time - especially when they're separated!!) When they hear a siren, they think that they're other dogs howling out to them and therefore they are howling back. Have you ever tried howling to them? You might feel a bit stupid, but if they howl back, it's so fun! Sometimes when I howl at my dogs they'll howl back. It's funny though - have you ever seen a group of yorkies howling? They're really ineffective!! haha but sooo cute!! :)

The sound of a siren may not actually hurt your dog's ears but rather just be at a pitch or register that the dog finds annoying, much as we would react to finger nails on a chalkboard. As we know, not all dogs react the same way. My dog doesn't react at all to sirens, so I guess the sound doesn't bother him at all.

The sirens are actually hurting their ears as they can hear better than a human. If they are in the home they need to be trained to stop doing it. Cathy

i don't think of it extremely is by way of soreness of their ears. we live close to a hectic highway the place the sirens bypass by a minimal of as quickly as an afternoon, if not extra, and our 2 canines hear a siren and run like loopy to get exterior by way of the doggie door to howl with the siren. If it injury their ears, I doubt they had run obtainable the place it extremely is even louder!

The siren sounds like a dog howling, so they join in.
A neighbor of mine who lived near a fire station had a parakeet and a dog. In time the bird learned to imitate the siren, the dog, and the people: "RRRRRR woof woof woof it's okay RRRRR woof woof its okay..."

because their sense of hearing is much sharper than the human - sirens and thunder cause too much stress in their ears so they sing to "release the pain in their ears"

I think that they think it another dog howling. My dog howls when a siren comes by and my vet told me that they think it is another dog howling!

It probably hurts their ears and they don't want to hear it. Just like we whistle when we don't want to hear what our wife says
